Illegal immigration can be defined as the entry of foreign national to a certain country without the permission of that country government (Yoshida, and Woodland, 2016). One of the countries which have been a victim of the illegal migration is the United States of America. In the US, the violation of migration laws and remaining in the country's territory even after the visa has expired passed one as illegal immigrants. According to estimations conducted in 2015, the number of unauthorized individuals in the United States was estimated at 11million. This number represents about 3.4% of the total population in the United States. As attributed by Yoshida, and Woodland (2016), the presence of illegal immigrants in the nation tend to increase the size of the economy and by extension increases the economic growth of the nation. However, the worrying question about illegal immigrants has been the case of their migration to the United States. This paper, therefore, will explore some of the possible reasons that led these immigrants into the country.
There are various causes or incentives which seems to be drawing a lot of foreigners to the United States. As put by Yoshida, and Woodland (2016), the majority of immigrants coming to the United States normally come for better opportunities which come in better employment and a greater degree of freedom. Some of them joined the nation with the intent of avoiding political oppression, famine, family reunification and freedom from violence among other reasons.
Regional causes: Most of the illegal immigrants especially those coming from Mexico and central Africa join the nation for economic reasons. However, sometimes they are reported to be joining for political oppression. Those who come from Asia to the nation come primarily for economic reasons. As explained by Preston and Randal (2014), some of them, however, come as result of indentured savants or sex slaves. Also, those joining the United States from Eastern Europe normally come for economic activities and sometimes, they are seen to be rejoining their family who is already are in the United States.
Economically induced incentives: The economic reason is one of the reasons which have been over the time cited as a motivation for individuals to illegally immigrate to the United States of America. In the United States, the illegal immigrants are likely to get a wage higher than what they would otherwise receive from their original home. A study conducted in 1978 by the Mexican illegal immigrant showed that they earn about six times in the United States from what they would have earned in their homes. Consequently, the US employers are normally pushed to hiring the illegal immigrants because one they could be no legal migration channel, secondly, the infective tine of the section when an employer hires illegal immigrants and finally the global economic change. Finally, another cause of illegal immigrants in the country is the termination of the bracero program. The program was a bi-national program which was between the US and Mexico in 1942-1964. The program was mainly designed to provide a legal flow of workers to the United States. When this agreement was terminated, the majority of the Mexican who had been working in the United States automatically become illegal immigrants in the nation.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the illegal immigrants bring a lot of economic growth to the country. As such, there should be laws put in place to ensure that the current illegal immigrants are documented so that they can also enjoy some of the social rights in the nation. With a well-established policy on immigration, everyone who is coming to America will be a document, and the number of illegal immigrants will be significantly reduced.
