Introduction

Brooklyn borough, Kings County, New York is the most populated county within the state. It is also the second-most densely populated county in America, with over 2,504,700 residents as of 2010 (Data Access and Dissemination Systems (DADS), 2019). It borders Queen's borough at Long Island's western end. In addition, Brooklyn has many tunnel and bridge connections to the Manhattan borough across East River, and it is connected with Staten Island through the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. King's County is the fourth-smallest in New York by land area.

Demographics of Neighborhood

The population of Brooklyn has been estimated by the United States Census Bureau to increase by 3.1% from the statistics provided in 2010. In the 2010 Census, the population of Brooklyn was 42.8% White, and 35.7% were non-Hispanic (Data Access and Dissemination Systems, 2019). In 2010, Brooklyn has some of its neighborhoods segregated based on religion, ethnicity, and race. Generally, Brooklyn's Southwest half is racially mixed, even though it has few African American residents, while the Northeast section is mainly Hispanic/Latino and African American. In addition, Brooklyn has high linguistic diversity, with people aged five years and above speaking English as the basic language.

Themes Affecting Brooklyn Borough, Kings County

Immigration

Immigration refers to the international movement of people to a county where they are not natives and do not have any citizenship status. The immigrants end up settling or residing in the regions as naturalized or permanent citizens. Immigration has affected Brooklyn borough, New York, as shown through the trends throughout its history (Abrajano, & Hajnal, 2017). The Population Census of both 2010 and 2018 revealed serious statistics for consideration, including the presence of Hispanics/Latino, African American ethnicities. While the White population represented major numbers in the population, African Americans and other ethnicities also represent large numbers. At the same time, people of colour and related races move into the county in search of employment opportunities and living the American Dream.

Criminal Justice

Criminal justice refers to delivering justice to the perpetrators of crime. The criminal justice system defines various government institutions and agencies, and its goals include the rehabilitation of criminals, preventing crimes, and morally supporting the victims (Feeley, 2017). The theme of criminal justice always affects Brooklyn because of the racial segregation effects that affect African Americans and other minorities. Different cases have been ruled against the black community, and some feel that the extent of these punishments have been severe enough. At the same time, African Americans are limited in opportunities because of the lack of education and inadequate access to education and other infrastructural opportunities. In the county, some statistics show that African Americans have run-ins with the criminal justice system and the law enforcement authorities. In return, they are imprisoned for crimes, some of which they did not commit.

New Research Project in the Neighborhood

A brand new research in the Brooklyn borough neighborhood would focus on the impact of incarceration on low-income families. The focus of this research is addressing how incarceration rates of minorities such as African Americans and Hispanics affect the low-income families in the county. While the high rates of incarceration are not a hidden issue in America, it has affected the ethnic minorities significantly. Some of the questions that this research will seek to explain include:

  • What is incarceration?
  • What are the rates of incarceration among ethnicities? And are there any differences in the incarceration rates?
  • What effects do the incarceration rates have on low-income families, including their children, parents, and social status of the affected families?
