Bringing up a boy is quite a challenge according to many parents in the United States. As a parent, you have to nurture your child to become a responsible member of society. Because boys are often subjected to bullying at some point in life, my parents taught me non-violent means of dealing with bullies. I was taught to always respect my peers and older members of the society. Furthermore, my father always taught me to be self-driven and responsible at all time since I would become my own family's breadwinner in the future.
Over the years, society as a whole has nurtured me to become a responsible member of society. Growing up, my mother taught me how to comb my hair and how to make my bed. These skills enabled me to develop a sense of responsibility since childhood. Furthermore, the skill of combing my hair has enabled me over the years, to meet the society's expectations of decent dressing. Things I was taught as a boy have built character and personality within me enabling me to thrive within the society.
Being one of the most significant aspects of sociology, socialization process fosters psychological, cognitive, and behavioral development among members of the society. Therefore, the interaction between an individual and other members of the society dictate the individual's general behavior and character. Among the six agents of socialization (family, peers, mass media, religion, and the government), the family is essentially the most significant. This is based on the fact that a child interacts with family members before he/she faces the society. At a tender age, a child may know some of the society's expectations through life lessons he/she learns from parents, siblings among other members of the family.
