Introduction

In the short story by Pierce, he tackled a landscape of relationships of human beings differently through the use of popular culture and contemporary media. A group of boys from a private school in Atlanta attempt to get into the Newsworld where the narrator of the story stated that emotions are usually sensations that are mysterious that he and his classmates cannot be able to express or even to comprehend. The tone in this short story is varied from humor to morbidity where one of the boys does not understand the reality of the explosions that they see on television. One of the boys laughed when a video was shown of the crime which happened when a jet rammed into a tower because he thought that it was an acted video, "He'd thought it was a movie, like Independence Day" (Pierce 504). They see the deaths and the explosions in the news as the movies they see in movie screens and television. The humor is that the boys believe that the debris they see in the television after the violence takes place as planned, and the debris is carefully organized. The brick piles and the broken plastics look like the glass is meant to help them in their understanding of the destructions that were realized in the World Trade Center attacks. Another aspect of humor is evident where when security guards catch the young men, it is evident that they will be escorted out of the park in shame, but the narrator makes the situation look funny with what he had running in his mind.

The themes that are portrayed in this story include the media, violence, and masculinity. The young men in this story reacted to acts of violence and the only way that they were able to express their emotional selves was through aggression, "We stole stuffed animals from the gift shops and gave them to our girlfriends" (Pierce 505). Pierce shows that the only way to show masculinity is through aggression and violence and this is a significant question on the culture, and this expresses the emotions expressed in the young men who were discussing the violence and crime aspects in the classroom. The media also shows images of people reacting in aggression to the criminal activities that are happening in the country and even though indirectly, it portrays that the young people should respond aggressively to crime. However, the American culture punishes the people who react to violence and such criminal activities in aggression, but it does not consider the role it played in making them adopt such behavior.

My point of view of this story is that the characters in this story were biased because they felt that the terrorist attacks that happened in the North could not affect them, but it affected them the most. Their malls were closed, their airports stopped working and even the park they enjoyed the most was closed down, and this was the beginning of their hard times, "Our teachers had told us the world would be different now-harder, difficult in ways we couldn't imagine" (Pierce 507). It is not possible for one part of a country to be affected by terrorist attacks without the other parts countrywide feeling the pinch. The way that the characters sneaked into the park shows that they enjoyed the park even though they pretended they did not.

Conclusion

The story consists of themes, and tones that are an exciting part of the story and communication of feelings is hard. The narrator of the story shows that the terrorism that took place in the country affected the whole country as a whole. The American culture and media showed that terrorism and violence are a central aspect of many nations.
