Introduction
The article by Scott Kirsner explores the fears that everyone has on the uncontrolled technology advancements that we have in the twenty-first century. The author accurately compares to the significant strides that have been made in the world of innovation as one that has tossed together in a reactor (Kirsner,01). One of the things that make one assume that the article is a tad melodramatic is the fact even in the first paragraph; the author just focuses on the negatives of having such advancements in technology.
While it is true that the advent of social media had come with its challenges such that the people have a chance of spreading falsities quickly as opposed to when they had to depend on other modes of communication that were not instant (Kirsner,04). The issue of cyber terrorism has also been made possible as the technology allows the option of having anonymity in people.
The author argues that technology has dramatically changed from the empowering and a life-changing factor to one that is now a destabilizing one (Kirsner, 02). Tragic events such as the 9/11 terror have been an issue that the Americans are yet to recover from, years later.
The article is one that focuses on the disadvantages of technology making it seem like it would have been better if the people had gone back to the Stone Age period where people relied on smoke signals to pass on some messages. Issues such as making social media to seem like the weaponized type of communication, where social media that was once intended to connect people from all parts of the world, become a site to fuel hatred and ultimately even cause civil wars (Kirsner,04).
The article while it focuses on the negatives that social media has brought, is one that is believable as it uses an expert who has handled the challenges of having a kind of war that was fuelled by the jabs that people throw at each other on social media (Kirsner,03). The author accurately captures the feelings that have been said to be right in social media as whenever one log in to any social media sites there is the possibility of experiencing an online exchange stranger.
The exchanges happen when one gives opinions that the other party feels that they are being crossed. The noble idea that the innovate or of various sites of social media had while developing the technology was hence one that was disregarded and instead had the people have a different perspective about the issue (Kirsner,05). The fact that even some politicians have resorted to going to social media to present their memoranda as in the case of Donald Trump in the previous elections is evidence enough about the impacts that social media have had on the people.
Inventions such as drones have had been a challenge in maintaining the security given that having a drone that one can monitor has been a regular thing. In such scenarios, the security becomes hard to maintain as not everyone has the same intentions and would even encourage people to have ideas that they would not also have contemplated had the said technology been nonexistent (Kirsner,07).
Conclusion
The article is hence one that presents some universal truths about the cons of having advanced technologically. The author, however, focuses on the negatives and fails to give a detailed impact of technology in a more wholesome manner.
