Introduction
In Fisher, Montgomery and Marsh's article, 'California Water: It's Not Just About Using Less', the article discusses water shortage and how it has affected the residents of California. It achieves this by discussing the sources of water, how water is used, water conservation and possible solutions to the current problems caused by water shortages and the looming challenges that would be caused by the demand of the growing population. There are two stakeholders who are affected by the water problem in California. On one hand, we have the residents of California who have constantly complained about the dwindling water supply and on the other hand, we have the local government who has been reluctant in resolving the issue. I have chosen this issue since water shortage is one of the main issues that have been affecting California for the last two decades. The ongoing drought in California and its effects such as wildfires and water restrictions is a common problem that has garnered national attention. Besides its direct impact on residents in the state, the future effects water situation in California seems to be a mystery to many. The two stakeholders, the residents of California and the local government are being compared since they have been constant wrangles between the two in connection to water shortages in the region.
The issues tackled in the article are pressing. The residents of California have every right to complain about water shortage in their state. According to Fihser, Montgomery, and Marsh (2018), "California has become something of a poster child for water shortages, having experienced moderate-to-severe drought conditions throughout much of the state for more than 5 years." Additionally, lack of water has in the past contributed to a serious wildlife threat that affected everywhere from southern California to the Pacific Northwest. The draught also has had serious ramifications on animals that thrive in the region it has forced some of them to take extreme measure in order to get access to water. The government, on the other hand, does not provide a conclusive reason as to why draught has been a persistent problem in the region. The problem has overly been discussed in the parliament but unfortunately, no legislative action has been taken to resolve it.
The article employs a qualitative research design in determining the effects of lack of water in California State. The method of study covers the responses of individuals that were interviewed in relation to water shortage, their view on the government's attempt to control the problem and remedies of the challenge. This makes the method of study feasible since it was quantitative and the data collected is recorded in a quantitative format. The method is very realistic since it captures the real effects of drought in the region. The method of study generates the data used in answering the research question by using questionnaires that the respondents fill. The questions of data validity were resolved in the study by carrying out randomized research on the impact of water shortage on both residents and animals. Based on the results of the study, Fisher, Montgomery, and Marsh established that water shortage is a serious issue in California and it should be resolved as soon as possible to revive agriculture practices and meet the water demand of the residents of California.
Conclusion
The article discusses a critical problem that affects the vast majority of the residents of California. I think that the local and federal government should formulate a mechanism of controlling water shortage in California. Several sectors of the economy rely on the use of water in the state, hence actions should be taken to increase water supply and control water usage so that it would serve the future demand of water by the ever-growing economy.
