Introduction
It is now evident to the world that the United States of America government cannot ensure the safety of their citizens. The recent school shootings have qualified this statement as several students and teachers lost their lives in the shootings (York). The society has been in a huge debate of whether arming teachers will be the right thing to do. Some people are for it, but others are not for it. The essay will look at the reasons why arming the teachers is the right thing to do and why it is not. The end goal is to see whether the schools will be safe from mass shootings.
In order to understand the problems that befall society, it is essential to analyze the pros and cons of the situation. The first advantage of arming the teachers is that the legal process will not be tedious since they meet all the requirements of a licensed gun holder. In most states in the US, the requirement is that a person has to be at least 18 years old to be able to purchase a gun. The government will deal with the policies issues which involve matters like this.
Secondly, the teachers and students know each other very well. They must be well acquainted so that the teacher can be able to tell who the gunman is. In most school shootings, the gunman is usually a past student (York). The motive of the student is often not known, but some say it is revenge. On the other hand, there are several reasons why teachers should not be given weapons.
Arming teachers may lead to unintended consequences. For instance, during class time, a naughty student steals the gun in order to play a prank. Such silly issues will arise if people decide to arm the teachers. Secondly, teachers may use the weapon for the wrong purpose (York). The guns are strictly meant for taking down active shooters and not scaring the students. The government will need to ensure there is a law passed against reckless use of the gun by the teachers
Thirdly, giving teachers guns mas destroy the teacher-student relationship established. In most school in the US, the teachers have created a positive connection with the students in that they can interact with each other robustly. The relationship will suffer since it will not feel the same for a student to talk to his math teacher who has a gun in his holster (York). The learner may feel afraid of the teacher and would be focused on keeping themselves safe rather than learn mathematics.
Fourthly the way the schools are built, there is no space for firearms in the institutions. It will be a mistake if the learners will have access to this weapon (York). The government may need to consider this factor before passing any policy. Lastly, if teachers become armed, it would have qualified the fear the society has on mass shootings. Most people have a phobia due to the recent shootings that it may happen again.
Conclusion
In conclusion, society must have a lengthy discussion before passing such policies. By so doing the people will understand the problem before them and come up with solutions. Due to the makeup of society, different things must be tried before implementing the best solution. Furthermore, as a result, the children in schools will remain safe and have no fear that a shooter may strike.
