I have had an interest in finance and accounting since I was twelve. Having been born and brought up in Ghana, I perfectly understand that the opportunity to attend college is a privilege. As I grew up, I had wonderful role models who helped shape my interests. I particularly admired my uncle who was a finance manager at a local bank. I remember visiting him countless times just to ask him about his job. The more information he gave me, the more I realized that I had a strong interest in the field of finance. Additionally, I was very good at mathematics and English, and I knew that such aptitudes would greatly boost my chances of pursuing Finance and Accounting Management. Generally, my family, teachers, and friends not only instilled moral values in me but also mentored me on the value of respect and hard work. As a result, I worked hard enough to earn myself a chance for further studies in my field of interest.
Unfortunately, some circumstances curtailed my studies, midway. It is regrettable that as I approached teenage, I mistook my parents' protection and advice for oppression. This ignorance did not come without a cost. I have had my fair share of failures. Nevertheless, I have not allowed these failures to hold me down. At some point in every teenager's life, mistakes are inevitable. I have learned a lot from my past and I am truly regretful. I want to turn my experiences into my motivation for success.
At only nineteen, I had to leave my parents and go for further studies in the United States. Luckily for me, although this was my first exposure to a land other than my own, I was able to adjust pretty fast as I had my elder sister to assist me whenever I had challenges. With my sister's help, I registered excellent performance. I mainly scored B's and A's. Honestly, I contribute this success to my sister's sacrifices. She was playing the role of a compassionate parent in my life. She often ensured that I understood, completed and submitted my assignments on time, got notes for me from my friends whenever I was incapacitated and took care of me when I was ill. She did all this without asking for anything in return.
When my sister finally completed her studies and went back to Ghana, I became more irrational than ever. I soon flew to Texas as I had heard that it was a beautiful state with a lot of tourist attractions. I knew there would be no adult supervision. I was on my own. I began getting D's like most of my schoolmates who seemed not to care. I knew that I had the potential to score A's and B's but I did not put any effort. Regretfully, I got to a point of accepting defeat and believed that my days of excellent academic performance were over. I resigned myself to D's and fails. My situation became worse, with time. The poor grades took a toll on me. I knew that this was not what I wanted. The thought of failure affected my emotional stability so much that I gradually slipped into a state of depression. I suffered multiple anxiety disorders that required the attention of a clinical psychologist. I eventually had to be excused from school to receive psychological therapy. In fact, I have been out of school on medical grounds but I am set to return after treatment.
I have already learned my lesson, though the hard way. I have learned that choices have consequences. All I am ready to do now is focus on my education and achieve my goals. I particularly want to study Finance and Accounting management because apart from it being my passion, my skill in mathematics and English is unmatched. These have given me a strong foundation for the discipline. I am sure that if given a chance, I will zealously utilize my ability since the course perfectly fits my set of skills.
Conclusion
I intend to do a lot of research on best practices in accounting and finance so as to sharpen my skills. I expect the research that I will carry out, as a student, to highly benefit the university' Department of Finance and Accounting as it will bring new knowledge and questions for further research in the field. As a finance manager in future, I aspire not only to continue with research but also apply the latest practices in the field of finance and accounting management.
