Love and loyalty are among the most important themes in Sophocles’ play Antigone. These emotions are integral to the story’s plot, as they play an essential role in determining the fate of many of the characters. The play follows the story of Antigone, a young woman who is determined to bury her brother Polynices despite the fact that her uncle, Creon, has declared that he is to be left unburied as punishment for his treasonous actions.

Antigone's significance lies in how love and loyalty drive characters' decisions and motivations. Antigone's loyalty and love for her family is the driving force behind her decision to disregard Creon's decree to bury Polynices. He is her love and she will stand up for Creon, despite all the consequences. Similar to Ismene, Antigone's love for Ismene is evident in her refusal of Creon's order and her efforts to protect her from the consequences.

It is evident that love and loyalty are important in shaping the relationships between characters. Creon's loyalty towards the law is contrasted by Antigone's loyalty her brother. This conflict is a reflection of the tension between individual and state in ancient Greece as well as between personal morality and public morality. Similar to Antigone's love for Ismene, Creon's love for his son Haemon is also contrasted. This is a reflection of the tension between political and familial loyalty.

Finally, love and loyalty are significant in Antigone because they are portrayed as having a moral value. Antigone’s loyalty to her brother is seen as a moral victory, while Creon’s loyalty to the law is seen as a moral failure. This suggests that love and loyalty are more important than following the law, and that they should be respected and celebrated.
