Introduction
Amazing grace is a production which addresses issues of social justice. Community ensures social justice when it has conditions which allow people to get what they like based on their vocation (Nardoni, 2004). The need for social justice is grounded in the New Testament when Jesus says "The Spirit of God has anointed me to proclaim liberty to captives" (Luke 4:18). Similarly, people are called to fight social injustice.
The film shows the factual story of William Wilberforce, a gentleman voted to the House of Commons in British Parliament at the age of 21 (Apted, 2006). The movie shows William 20-year to illegalize slave trade in Britain. Wilberforce is a serious Christian, in a dilemma between a career in legislation and spiritual life. He looks for advice from John Newton, an ex-slave ship captain troubled by his "20,000 ghosts" that he put on a sackcloth and make a spiritual vow and compose the hymn "Amazing Grace." Newton communicates to Wilberforce incidents of iniquities done to slaves. He tells Wilberforce to "publish it and blow a hole in their ships with it... [W]e were apes, they [the slaves] were human.... I couldn't breathe until I wrote this." As a Catholic, much can be borrowed from Wilberforce. According to the film, William believed that "God Almighty has set before me two great objects: the suppression of the slave trade and the reformation of society." To this end, it can be stated that the film highlights vital themes such as dedication to personal beliefs, anti-slavery, social justice, and leadership.
Remember the Titans
This movie is directed by Boaz Yakin and it is a real account about the reunion between the rivalries in Alexandria. In the film, the firstly hostile outlooks by whites towards the blacks is changed into a festive gratitude of merits of having races cooperation. Herman Boone is named the head of the football coach and Genteel Bill is passed over because of affirmative action. Considering the scene at preseason camp, Boone's states "This is not a democracy," he further argue that "this is a dictatorship. I am the law." At first, he is angered, Yoast was seeking another career when he realizes that stay away from of a team by white players would threaten their odds for college and thus he accepts Boone's agree to remain as defensive trainer. Evidently, whites learned more from the black about persistence in midst of partiality.
In the Remember the Titans, towards the end, black player visits a white in the hospital (Bruckheimer, 2000). The nurse states "Only kin is allowed." However, the bedridden player responds by saying "Can't you see that's my brother?" At the end of the film, people are overwhelmed that they lead fruitful lives because of the model for racial integration in schooling and housing. This is a good film because teenagers overcome challenges to conquest football match with assistance of considerate adults. Moreover, the movie shows positive results realized by racial integration and solidarity.
Conclusion
According to Saint John Paul II, people cannot afford to stay unaffected to the discriminations which are in the world. The Catholic community has a duty to work for social justice, never get tired of creating just world punctuated by greater solidarity (Adamiak & Walczak, 2014). The idea was supported by Pope Francis when he emphasized that cohesion "is not a feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of so many people, both near and far. On the contrary, it is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good; that is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all" (Nardoni, 2004).
