To begin with, dogs qualify as the best pets since they offer unrivaled companionship and friendship to their owners. Studies illustrate that when dogs are around humans, they tend to produce the love hormone oxytocin which induces the anti-stress effect on human (Petersson et al., 2017). Interestingly, unlike the cats which breed low oxytocin levels, dogs produce high levels of oxytocin which translates to greater bond and satisfactory calming effect to the owners. Therefore, dogs undoubtedly qualify as the best friends to humans.

Secondly, the loyalty and bravery exhibited by dogs are unrivaled which makes dogs useful as security agents. Although their breeds determine the efficacy of dogs as security agents, regardless of their size all dogs make a genuine attempt to warn their owners or even avert the danger (Fielding & Plumridge, 2004). In this case, with a dog, as a pet one is assured that any break in attempt will instigate the dog's barking as a warning and at other times the dog does not shy away from getting personal and attacking the invader. In this regard, there is no better way to get peace of mind and enhance one's security than keep a dog as your close pet.

Additionally, keeping a dog assures you of an ever-ready play partner. Consequently, a dog as a pet translates to a variety of health benefits both physically and emotionally. Primarily, dogs are physically active and easy to train; as such, they act as good companions for exercise during morning runs or playmates in the home compound. Moreover, since they genuinely enjoy human company dogs are unlikely to get irritable regardless of how long you stay with them. Studies illustrate that oxytocin release in dogs increases the oxytocin release in a human which in turn generates effects such as decreased cortisol levels and blood pressure(Petersson et al., 2017). Furthermore, a dog's tail wagging and rubbing its self their owners cause non-noxious sensory stimulation to the owners which in turn not only, increases function of the gastrointestinal tract, but also helps to increase pain threshold.

Conclusion

From this review, it is evident that the advantages of dogs as pets cannot be compared with other pets. Besides their genuine friendship and companionship, dogs are also loyal and fearless which makes them great for security. Furthermore, dogs have several health benefits to their owners including helping one to keep fit and exercise, lower blood pressure, reduce stress and increase pain threshold. In this regard, for social, emotional, and physical benefits one cannot go wrong with a dog as a pet.
