The 2020 presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump will be one of the most competitive races in the history of the U.S. Donald Trump is the sitting president and a Republican who has been in power since 2007, when Barack Obama exited power. Joe Biden, on the other hand, is a Democrat and a former vice president in the Barack Obama administration. The two candidates enjoy relatively equal support from both the public and the Electoral College.
The aim of every American, both leaders, and ordinary citizens, is to have a president who will ensure that the country is economically prosperous and protect the constitution of the country. These two factors will play a critical role in the election of the president in the 2020 general election. Since Trump is a sitting president, his chances of winning will be determined by his performance in the last four years as the president. In the case of Joe Biden, his chances of victory will largely be determined by his past achievements and weaknesses.
Donald Trump is one of the few presidents whose tenure in the future is characterized by increased economic prosperity and reduced the unemployment rate. Although the rate of unemployment in the country has been on the steady decline since 2010, during President Obama's time, the unemployment in January 2020 reached 3.6%, almost reaching 50 years low of 3.5% had it not been an outbreak of coronavirus (Reality Check team). Besides, household income has continued to increase during the Trump administration. To protect the economy of the country against the influence of ever-rising Asia, Trump implements trade protection via tariffs on goods imported from China (Posen 29). The policy to protect the country's economy and people's jobs at the expense of international relations was a bold move by Trump that earned him support from most of the lower and middle-class Americans (Boyer 3). Except for a few achievements, however, it is essential to note that Trump inherited a good economy from Obama's administration.
Despite Trump's economic achievements, he is one of the presidents who have been accused of some severe unconstitutional malpractices. One of such misconduct is the allegation of colluding with Russia to help him win the 2017 presidential election (Stiglitz 516). Besides, he has been accused of forcing other countries, including Ukraine, of providing damaging information about his competitors in the 2020 general elections. These allegations have led to the impeachment attempt against him. Other weaknesses of Donald Trump include the increase in the number of Americans who do not have health insurance because of the amendment on Obama care during his tenure and the way he handled the Coronavirus pandemic despite receiving an earlier warning about the possible effects.Joe Biden, on the other hand, has several achievements and weaknesses too. One of the accomplishments was his active participation in the passing of the Affordable Care Act as well as the stimulus package that helped the country out of the Great Recession. Perhaps one thing that helps him win favor from the citizen is his ability to work with anyone and his support for labor movements. His relations and endorsement for the presidency by President Obama is also an indication that Joe Biden is a loyal person who can faithfully serve the Americans. Despite these strengths, Biden's weakness includes opposing the Gulf War that liberated Kuwait from Iraqi troops in 1992 as well as authorizing the use of force and Iraq invasion based on false intelligence (Waisanen and Becker 257).
From the above discussion, it is evident that the two presidential candidates have some strengths and weaknesses. However, comparing the two, it is Joe Biden, based on his long term experience, should be elected as the president in 2020. Joe Biden has been in the political limelight for many years than Donald Trump, yet there are fewer allegations against him. He should be elected to help reverse the health problems facing the country, mainly concerning universal insurance policies.
