Introduction

Being young in childhood is the most significant point in life where life is simple and allows one extended freedom. Being young is the most fulfilling yet a very short period in life that passes us by without realizing the privileges bestowed by being young. Rogers Rex writes a poem by recollecting the best moments of youth and childhood which creates a picture of what it is to be young again. Most people would want to be young again because it is an age of ignorance and play. Young people are allowed to make mistakes without being rebuked and not to worry of tomorrow and childhood allows one to lead a carefree life where one can enjoy nature more intimately as noted by Rogers in walking barefoot in the woods, the hollows, and glens. Most people long to be young again to experience nature with the old man in the family where one is able to learn. People experience more fulfillment when they are young because being young one gets a chance to walk through the hardwood forests and collect steel pennies from the bin while playing baseball and marbles. Life is at the young age is simple and some steel pennies appear to be a lot of money because the most important thing at the young age is the ability to play in the most beautiful and serene conditions such as the old farm and the hardwood forests.

The Age of Innocence

Being young is the age of innocence, where apart from learning grammar and fractions it is fine to stare at a young girl and only realize her grin without being judged and rebuked for harboring hidden agendas. At night, one is able to read the comic books and novels while dreaming to be a hero which shows the level of innocence in children. Young people are able to look upon and appreciate the creativity of God's creation that surrounds us. At a young age, one is aware of sin and get to understand one's emotions such as love and hold forgiveness as a virtue to treasure. At a young age, it is easy to recognize God and appreciate salvation which is offered by religion. At a young age, one is filled with optimism that we are invulnerable and invincible. At a young age, anything can be achieved and self-doubt has not started to take hold and control our imagination. Being young we all have hope, hope for a better future and a better world. It is at a young age that one is able to enjoy a peaceful and the life full of energy where our dreams start to form and life is yet to be unbearable and disappointing. High optimism enables children to lead more fulfilling lives because responsibilities are few and one is not limited to dream.

Childhood and Early Adulthood Life is Brief

Childhood and early adulthood are very brief and pass quickly which leaves one longing to be young again. Most people hold fantasies of young life because of its simplicity, free from responsibilities and it is also the age of innocence. The fantasy of being young can help one go back in time like in the case of the author where he longs for the times of John F. Kennedy and also Ronald Kennedy when it was worth living because the cost of living was still low. However, being young also has its hardships since one has to endure the horrors of the Vietnam War, racism, and rebellion which were experienced during the 1980s. Although everyone wishes to be young again the reality of life catches up with us all. Young people are able to live a carefree life and not to think about serious responsibilities that adults have to face every day. In adulthood, life becomes a competition for the limited resources to meet our daily needs. Young people are not aware of racism and prejudice and they are able to treat all the people the same. Adulthood ushers the experience of pain, losing loved ones and comrades and one has to experience prejudice where people are treated differently based on their ethnic background. Being young one does not experience the hate in the world as people become more persecuted as they grow up by their unachieved dreams and unfulfilling careers. Being young is a life full of satisfaction before the world become a competition for the fittest issue. Being young absolves one the need to wonder about the need for one to have ambition because the world is fair and everyone hides behind the mask.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Rogers views being young as the perfect time in life when one can enjoy unlimited freedom from responsibilities and also receive gentle treatment. Being young allows one to get satisfaction from doing simple activities such as playing in the woods. Being young one is free from regrets and is unaware of the inequality and the pain in the unfair adult life. Childhood according to Rex Rogers should be regarded as a privilege where one is amused by nature and heroes in the comic books that inspire us to be heroes and think of virtues. However, as one grows old, we realize that being young is very brief and one cannot bargain to experience it again. One can only try to be content with their age and become bemused by the challenges and successes that come in our way.
