Introduction
Community service refers to a free attempt or volunteering to the community in order to benefit the community in one way or another. America has benefited more from volunteerism than any other country, and it is an opportunity to strengthen relations between the different ethnic group America houses, a chance to bond and to come together as Americans and take care of their own. It has resulted in the rise of the many different organizations from the health sectors, schools, environment to social groups offering their labor and services as a contribution to the community.
The American-Asians group has contributed a lot to the building of America. The Angels Development Group is a program that focuses on this ethnic group, especially the Chinese. This is a project that will check the different areas over the long stretch of American history of the Chinese contribution to American society (Saylor, 2019). Some of these contributions are; the laying/building of the railway line, agricultural sector, pool of labor, and so forth. This program will also highlight the different community services offered by this ethnic group to benefit the vast American community. This will include their volunteerism in schools, shelters, and participation in different raising matters in the community around them.
One of the contributions was a source of labor. The Chinese immigrants created a pool of labor that was greatly needed, especially by factory workers and the mining companies. The growing population meant an increase in demand, and to manage this, the Chinese factory workers would help in manufacturing highly demanded consumer goods such as clothing, cigars, footwear, and etcetera.
Economic growth was another contribution, and this is due to the different business entities the Chinese owned or ventured in. For example, in California, they established the first western fisheries, thus propelling the economy of California. They also transformed vast swampy areas in California to farmlands meant for generating a profit and owned businesses such as restaurants and shops. The areas they settled also attracted tourism, which became a source of income too.
The other contribution was off the railroad; Former United States President Barack Obama acknowledged this contribution by appreciating the Chinese workers in helping in the completion of the railway line building. These workers were employed by the Central Pacific Railroad, and their incredible efforts made the American nation linked. The Labour Department installed a plaque in its Hall of Fame to honor the Chinese workers' efforts and toughness to work on such challenging terrains such as tunneling, track laying, the extreme winter, and summer conditions. The included challenge was the loss of their loved ones during the whole construction process, but eventually, their brains, skills, and labor would build the greatest railway roads in history and still in use over 100 years later in America.
The Chinese also contributed to language development. That is, the American-Chinese saw the need for bilingual education for equality in educational opportunities. This has led to it being taught in community schools and universities. The other contribution was in agriculture, especially in California, were the Chinese converted vast swampy areas for farming, which would generate profit.
The Angels Development Group not only focuses on those past contributions but also acts as an American-Chinese group/ project out for community service. It comprises of a not specific number of volunteers as it recruits anyone interested to lend a helping hand for the benefit and prosperity of the society. Some of these community services are; In schools, The Angels Development group has selected a few schools to give free Chinese lessons as a method to promote and encourage the diversity in American society. This group does not focus on American-Chinese citizens, but whoever interested, they can feel free to join in the lessons (Chang, 2019). The lessons are mostly offered on Friday evenings, weekends, and sometimes incorporated in the school system and taught as a subject. Despite it being a small organization, it also puts efforts to make small donations such as storybooks and writing materials.
The group also has a team that volunteers to work in elderly homes. This is a program that was started due to the high percentage of the elderly in the Chinese community, but now it has expanded to lend that helping hand to different elderly homes. It as well trains the volunteers to be good caregivers and give support, love, and affection (Chen, Chow, and Nguyen, 2018).
The group also helps in the shelters. Due to the increased number of immigrants and the increased poverty levels, the shelters are often overwhelmed. Some are students who find their way here, with no place to call home, therefore making The Angels Group program step in to help the shelter people in the possible way they can, for example, holding fundraisers to generate at least enough money for donations such as beddings, food, clothes and sometimes footwear.
Conclusion
In summary, the Chinese-Americans ethnic group has done a tremendous job towards the building of the American nation, from their first ancestral fathers till to date. The Angels Development Group is a non-profit project put forth to still commit to works that benefit the greater public. This program focuses on the then contribution least people forget while on the other hand, run volunteering services to schools, elderly homes, the shelters, and in any other activity where their services may be needed. The volunteers in this program benefit from skills such as improved communication skills with others, self-worth, stress reduction. It is all about the American community, touching souls, and being an angel of hope and happiness to someone out there.
