1960's

Just as many countries in Asia, the United Arab Emirates had a marginal economy since the economic activities taking place at that time were fishing, trading bronze, and high-quality natural pearls (which lasted up to the 1930's). The pearl trade had attracted other Asians such as Indians, where some of them decided to settle in the UAE since the emirates had imposed a tax-free rule. After the collapse of the pearling industry, the country was economically devastated hence leading to leaders finding other ways of livelihood. In 1958, oil was discovered under an old pearling bed in the Persian Gulf, Umm Shaif and in the desert at Murban in 1960. From the first cargo of crude oil exported in 1962, the oil revenue increased. The discovery of oil increased employment for the locals and also attracted expats from other countries. Due to the increased employment opportunities, the population increased rapidly.

1980's

The discovery of oil in the UAE opened doors for other sectors such as he health sector and education sector to grow. In the health sector, it is evidenced by the construction of the Rashid Hospital in Dubai in 1972, Dubai's Department of Health and Medical Services in 1973, Dubai hospital in 1983, Noor Hospital in Abu Dhabi in 1985 and finally the Al Wasi Hospital in Dubai in 1986. The led to an influx of doctors, nurses and other expats in the medical sector in the UAE. The education sector on the other hand had its fair share of employment since the construction of the UAE University in 1973, Higher Colleges of Technology in 1988 and the Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies in 1983. These developments attracted expats into the country.

2000's

This decade indicates the modernization of almost all economic sectors in the country. The UAE increased employment in the construction industry where it built the world's tallest building; Burj Khalifa (828 meters) in January 2010 and many more towers in the city. This has also led to the growth of the tourism industry as most tourists travel to see the tallest buildings and other constructions such as the famous aquarium. Due to the growth of the tourism industry, there has been construction of luxurious hotels thus increasing employment for most of the citizens and other foreigners. In this era, job seekers from other continents such as Africa, South America and many more, are having many opportunities to work.

Conclusion

The UAE strives to excel in all its sectors hence it will not rest until all is achieved. This means that it will continue to diversify its economy and creating more job opportunities and bringing new innovations in the world.
