Taking my family as an example, the career choice that people take may be greatly influenced by the socio-economic factors of the family. One of the socio-economic factors that influence education opportunities that people have in the family includes the amount of income the parents and other families have and the willingness of the family members to finance one's education. In my family, the career that parents take, greatly influence the career path of their children, however, one or two members of a family would make different academic and career choices.
On the side of my mother, the socio-economic trend is influenced by the parent career and the amount of income the parents have. For instance, my great-grandfather was a pearl driver, and my great-grandmother was a housewife, only one of my great uncles became a driver. The fact that being a pearl driver at the time earned enough money to train my great uncles and grandmother to any level of education they wished, my grandmother completed her education and became a science teacher while my other great uncle became a petroleum engineer. Since my grandfather was educated and was a mechanical engineer, and my grandmother being a science teacher, all my uncles had the motivation, financial support and positive influence to allow them become academicians including a biologist and a dentist. However, my father chose a different path and became a businessman, which was influenced by the fact that, on the side of my father, my great-grandfather was a merchant and my grandfather a financial analyst.
On the side of my father, my great-grandfather was a merchant, and my great-grandmother was a housewife. Since being a merchant at the time could earn my great grandfather enough money to train my great aunt and grandfather to any level they wanted, my great aunt became a librarian, and my grandfather became a financial analyst. My grandfather's career influenced my father's choice to become a businessman and one of my uncles to become a financial analyst, just like my grandfather, and another uncle also became an accountant. The fact that my grandfather married a career woman, all his sons were influenced to marry career women including a doctor, biomedical engineer (my mother) and a business consultant.
My cousins, my siblings and I have been influenced by the fact that our parents are beneficiaries of education. We have all chosen to take education as our path to success. My cousins who have completed school are a paralegal and a business lawyer, while my siblings are PR manager and a lawyer, while I am an INS/ECO student. Most of the members of my fathers' family tree have taken an interest in business and other business related careers as an influence from the great-grandfather. Since both, my grandfather and grandmother on the side of my mother were career people, their children either married or got married to career people, except my mother who got married to a businessman. However, my father being a businessman could also be considered a career as he does what he studied and he employs people in his business firm.
Conclusion
In summary, in my family tree, gender is not considered a factor in what career path or level of education one has. What influences what people become most is the financial ability of the parents and the influence from parents' career path. What the parents become greatly influence the career path that their children take. Parents in my family invest heavily in the education of their children as they know the importance of education as a wealth creation tool.
