Introduction
The Shurtleff guideposts are everything an actor needs to know while performing an audition. How to create them on stage, what is the conflict of interest, how to a start a scene and how to make things happen for the first time, locating a dramatic score and how to make it happen on a bare stage and playing them for reality.
Relationships
According to the monologue from Melville boys play; Mary, she has a sister who roped her with Lee a married man in his thirties, Mary is very resentful about him.
"Well, let me tell you something, mister. Don't start preaching to me about how things can't be the way they used to be, because I, for one, am counting on it. And if I want to sit around for two years, or five years, or ten years and wait for some clown to come home in my car, then I'll goddamn wait!"
With reference from Melville boys plays, Marys' response about the double date, she wishes to be left alone to make decisions on when, whom and whether she wants to go out, this causes some emotional distress to Mary.
Conflict
According to Michael, Mary from the Melville boys play is trying to get Lee to admit that it was a date he had taken her. She doesn't rest until he acknowledges that it's a date and he threaten him off by telling him that it's not over yet, they will be doing more years.
"I don't care whose idea it was. We went! We had dinner with you. We danced with you. We put dresses on. How many women did you see there tonight with dresses on? Three! Me, Joana, and Mrs. Gilbert, So, don't tell me this isn't a date."
Moment beforeAccording to Shurtleff, the moment before starts at the middle, for instance about Melville play, Mary is left by her husband after some time her sister decides to rope her with another man. Mary is not for the idea of been left alone with this man since she seems not to be over her husband who abandoned her and took Mary's car with him.
"My husband abandoned me, to make it worse he left with my car leaving me helpless, I suffered emotional distress, shame and a lot of humiliation from my friends. All this time I decided to take time to heal from my emotional distress. Am still trying to get over him up to now."
Events
According to Michael Shurtleff, an event is something that happens within the play or changes that occur during the synopsis of the play. The play can have happened before the play began and might have occurred during the outline, creating changes to the characters.
"My husband abandons me and takes my car with him, after some time my sister decides to hook me up with a dying, married man, we go on a double date, and I end up been left alone with this man. We have dinner together; dance and this man tries to deny that it wasn't a date I become so furious and end up causing drama. This day makes me change my perception about been left alone, and I decided to be having more frequent dates with this man."
