On August 8th, 2016, in the New York Daily News, Adam Edelman wrote a story about Donald Trump terming him as the most reckless American president in American history if elected, based on the damning letter by the national security experts. The national security experts; a group of 50 experts, work on the security issues in the United States (Edelman, 2016). The open letter stated that Mr. Trump is not qualified to be US Commander in Chief and president. Most importantly, the letter said that Mr. Trump lacks the experience, values and character to be the president and would put the United States well-being and national security at risk. They stated that Mr. Trump presidency would not be able to separate falsehood from truth, will weaken the moral authority in the US and have no critical qualities for the White House top Job (Edelman, 2016). The letter states He lacks self-control and acts impetuously. He cannot tolerate personal criticism. He has alarmed our closest allies with his erratic behavior (Edelman, 2016) These are qualities that are dangerous in anyone aspiring to become the Commander-in-Chief and President, with command of the nuclear arsenal in the US.
However, on 9th August 2016 in the Daily Mail, Nikki Schwab, a political reporter wrote about Mr. Trumps response to the letter, which was considered to be politically motivated. Mr. Trump robustly rejected the critic and swatted back putting the national security experts and his main rival Hillary Clinton as the individuals the US people need to look at in answering the mess taking place in the world as they are to be blamed for making the world a dangerous place (Schawb, 2016). He declared them the failed Washington elite who want to hold their power and they have led to disastrous decisions of Iraq Invasion, Americans death in Libya and Benghazi, and resulted in the rise of the ISIS (Schawb, 2016). Despite these failures, they think they are entitled to use their favor trading to land taxpayer-funded government contracts and speaking fees (Schawb, 2016). Nikki Schwab describes that Mr. Trump is proposing an end to this gravy train and offer a better foreign policy and a better American vision. It is the Vision of America that stands, to rebuild the military, seek peace over war and make America better again.
Interpretation
Donald Trump is Unfit to be the US President
Mr. Trump has succeeded for approximately a year in turning the America into a massive high school. The letter by the national security experts is an evident sign that Mr. Trump is failing to win over voters who are worried about his erratic behavior and mercurial temperature, because it is clear that he lacks credentials of a national leader and may be dangerous if elected. The letter was scathing enough to repudiate candidacy of Mr. Trump and was remarkable in its harshness. Donald Trump is not the answer to this crucial election and the daunting challenges in American society. Unless he announces before the election that he is secretly an undocumented Mexican immigrant, gay, and Muslim (Edelman, 2016), he is certainly going to be one of the best American presidents if elected. With his vision of making America better again, how much impact would he have if he becomes the US president? This is probably the question every individual is asking himself.
Considering the two stories by the journalists, Mr. Trump falls into a filtered category. He wants to gain power by opposing the political elites or through little national political experience. Hillary Clinton can be categorized into the unfiltered category as she looks to have huge effects and may end up being remembered as the best. Mr. Trump opposes the Republican establishment, branding him as the most unfiltered president if elected in American history. Some warnings may have prompted the 50 national security experts to label Mr. Trump the most reckless American president in American history if elected and withdrew their support. In a race for leadership, a candidate may have unearned advantages making the competition unfair. Mr. Trump despite his pretensions of being an entrepreneur who is successfully runs a company started by his father, inherited about $200 million from his dad, bailed many times and made his career by the use of his family and father connections (Schawb, 2016). Meaning, Mr. Trump inherited connections, position, and wealth, making Americans not to be sure of his skills though he postures himself as a self-made man. Here is a man whose favorite arguments is that his success in business makes him the best candidate. He brags about his contacts overseas, his negotiating skills and his net worth and he does not understand that for a top political job, experience in politics is much more essential than money making. His skills are only peculiar to a kind of skill set. Electing him to the Oval office with no politics experience is dicey and is a huge risk. When dealing with such a critical job in the world, how many risk should one take? Mr. Trump lacks the experience, of being the president and would put the United States well-being and national security at risk.
In the New York Daily News, Adam Edelman wrote Mr. Trump lacks the values and character of becoming the president. Mr. Trump advocates for a return of killing and torturing terrorist families. This is one of the most immoral and reckless approaches that an American president can have. He therefore, lacks the belief and knowledge of the U.S Constitution, U.S institutions and U.S Laws like religious tolerance, Judiciary independence and press freedom. Mr. Trump further threatens the US allies and friends and compliments the US adversaries. Unlike other presidents, Mr. Trump is not interested in educating himself as he continues showing ignorant on facts of the contemporary international politics. The letter said, he is unable to differentiate falsehood from truth, pointing critic on his personal traits. He is unable to tolerate personal criticism, prompting him to respond with erratic behavior that the national security experts and his main rival Hillary Clinton are to be blamed for making the world a dangerous place and declaring them as the failed Washington elite who want to hold on to their power. This show that Mr. Trump lacks the temperament of becoming the US president because of his inability to control his emotions, discipline himself, take advice and reflect before saying anything. Research has indicated that people have agreeableness that is low as considered to be untrustworthy. It is common for politicians to lie, dont you think? However, Mr. Trump appears extreme. By analyzing the truthfulness of Mr. Trump statements in Campaigns, PolitiFact lately calculated that about 2% of Trumps claims are true, 15% are half true, 7% are mostly true, 42% are false, 15% are mostly false, and 18% are pants on fire.
Nikki Schwab however, describes that Mr. Trump is offering a better foreign policy and a better American vision. Donald Trump supporters also believe Trump will do well in office despite the fact that he has embarrassed himself on many occasions by speaking without thinking rationally. They think Trump can bring a change that Obama administration has failed to deliver in the country. They forget that Hillary Clinton also aims to make America greater again with her campaign slogan being stronger together. Mr. Trump may only be able to change the America for the better as long as he continues encouraging the US to stand boldly for their beliefs, but he has no commitment, the nerve, the appeal, and the ideas to accomplish it. Mr. Trump, a lovable loudmouth, should not be considered by the voters for the America to be on the safer side.
Conclusion
Many Americans are frustrated with the American government because of its inability in solving international and domestic problems. Most Republicans have doubts about Hillary Clinton, but Donald Trump is not American solution into this critical election and the daunting challenges in the US. In the Oval Office, Mr. Trump will be the most reckless president in the History of the Americans. In politics, Mr. Trump is considered a Machiavellian, cynical, callous and cunning by the American politicians standards. In sum, Mr. Trump personality represent a president who is very combustible, a president having no cordial relation with the truth. He may become a ruthless, aggressive and daring decision maker looking to create the strongest and awesome results, and who never things of the collateral damage he would leave behind, be it explosive, threatening, bellicose or tough. The letter by the national security experts aimed at raising awareness and the alarm among US voters who see Donald Trump as an attractive candidate in some ways but are not able to understand what is required for one to become the US president. The 50 national security experts have before served different presidents in the White House for decades, and they are aware of what is needed to become a president. It is there concern that prompted the writing of the letter to withdraw their support because Mr. Trump does not have the temperament, the judgment and qualifications of becoming the US president. His erratic behavior and mercurial temperature, indicate that he lacks credentials of a national leader and may be dangerous if elected. Donald Trump is therefore not the answer to this crucial election and the daunting challenges in American society. He may only be able to change America for the better as long as he continues encouraging the US to stand boldly for their beliefs. History is watching, and they must choose to believe in American vision. America is waiting to see if it can rise to the occasion by showing it is an in-depended, strong and free nation.
