The colonialist model suggests that psychology plays a very key role in the determination of human behavioral disorders despite theology being more significant in such cases. It suggests psychology as not being relevant in a church setting but the adoption of its principles in solving some religious-related problems. Behavior formation is a part of the cognitive mind in psychology. Psychology extensively works on the mental process with entails with perceptions and how one is modified to respond to those feelings (Entwistle, 2015).

Eating disorders are behavioral disorders that mainly arise from the constant influence of an organism's environment. The continuous impact from the environment can lead to the permanent development of behavior which can be an eating disorder. Cognitive behavior development which entails continuous learning from the environment is one of the key components being explained in the colonialist model. People tend to learn to imitate hierarchy and supremacy. Cultural grading of perspectives and other behavior-related factors which are the key determinants in behavioral learning. The colonialist model which identifies supremacy between theology and psychology with nonetheless elaborating on the importance of psychology. Eating disorders are mainly a result of one wanting to lose weight which often goes wrong and later leads to the development of other psychological disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia. With a keen interest in this phenomenon, it is clear to realize that the radical mind process plays a vital role in the development of such disorders. Depression is defined as a lack of interest in activities that were once pleasurable. Mostly it's associated with the feeling of sadness and unhappiness. The greatest contributor is the lack of emotional control and the ability to respond effectively to reactions. However, depression is a result of multifactorial factors with psychology being the greatest factor in the causation of this disorder. Theologically depression remedies are mainly conducted through the use of psychological approaches with the use of religious doctrines.

The main advantages of these approaches mainly include the interrelation between psychological approaches and theological beliefs (Peters, 2017). The main role which is played by religion is to impact new behaviors in people. Biblically, bad habits are discouraged as they do not please God. The limitations brought about religion have a great significance in the limitation of people's potential towards certain behaviors. It is important to acknowledge that the behavior change process is accelerated based on biblical concepts while at the same time adoption of new beliefs is purely psychological. Hence, the role of psychology in a religious set up cannot be entirely despised.

The disadvantage of this approach is due to the presence of conflicting ideologies based on theological and psychological values. Psychology beliefs that behavior change follows a series of processes and approaches (Peters, 2017). One example is the classical conditioning approach which is conflicting with religious approaches of behavior changes which are entirely through decision making to abandon all they sinful behaviors which are scriptural and choose to do as to what pertains with the will of God. Hence, this conflict between theological doctrines and psychological beliefs is what makes the colonialist model consider psychology as a foreign concept.
