Introduction

The use of speed technology has been greatly supported by both scholars and safety practitioners. However, the adoption of radar speed technology has been supported and refuted. One particular article that I found interesting, reliable and the objective is the article by Radars (2019).

That police radar a police speed guns can sometimes be at a fault and problematic. The police radar errors are some of the main issues that most people have cited as the main reason why they got a citation for overspending. According to the articles, the way the police guns or police radar are used can amount to errors and give wrong readings even if a driver was not over speeding. For example, the police radar can give a false reading if the user is not focused on specific vehicles (Chiriac, Cuciureanu, & Nituca, 2016). Williamson, Fries, & Zhou, (2016) argued that the police traffic radar usually does not tell the operators that object that is being measured or the direction that the objects traveling to. Such limitation requires that the speed guns must be developed with some electronic compromises to accommodate for the inherent technological errors. Speed guns will be affected by temperature variation since they are made of wires that behave differently in different climaxing conditions. Wires can contract during the cold weather and expand during the hot climatic conditions. We are not sure how the manufacturers have integrated such potential technological limitations in their speed guns. Even if the extraneous factor were factored in developing the speed guns, the speed guns cannot be 100% accurate all the time. The police using the radar speed technologies should consider the climaxing conditions before charging one for over speed.

Below is the original extract from the article:

"When the International Association of Chiefs of Police tested 24 radar models in 1983 and '84, the results showed that nearly all of the units were affected by temperature variation, five failed accuracy tests, four had unacceptably wide beam widths and three tended to provide inaccurate readings due to nearby police or CB radios. Federal performance standards were proposed but never adopted during the Reagan administration. Instead, radar manufacturers promised to police their own ranks. From our perspective, things haven't improved."

My paraphrase of the above text is as shown below:

According to Radars (2019), when 24 radar models were tested by the international association of chiefs of police in the year 1983 and 1984, the police chiefs found that almost all the units were faulty as they were compromised by the variations in temperature. Five of the speed guns failed in the accuracy test while four of the speed gun models produced unacceptable wide beam widths. Only three model\'s readings were distorted by the nearby police radios. After the findings, the chiefs proposed several performance standards for the speed guns but the proposals were not adopted during the administration of President Reagan. Instead, the manufacturers of the radar guns promised to guard their ranks. From our review, no improvement has been made.

My question this week.

Considering the advances in technologies and the fact that most of the technologies can be affected by climatic changes, should the radar guns be adopted as the only strategy for catching overspending drivers? Should this Technogym by combined with other techniques to help in confirming the accuracy of the readings?
