Entertainment is a requirement for psychological wellbeing of individuals as it offers a break from routine work and gives a sense of enjoyment. The forms of entertainment vary across not only generations but also depending on the environment within which a person lives which changes their conception of what constitutes entertainment. In various societies such as in the United States of America, there is an increasing concern about how the Millennials behave at the universities, in particular on the issue of entertainment. In the United States, colleges record low completion rates and unprecedented deaths, which result from the nature of their social life.
The fact that entertainment provides a unique opportunity for people to experience the other side of life without unnecessary restrictions implies that it is one of the contributors to various social problems among students such as alcohol use during a night entertainment or picking up antisocial behavior from how their friends act during entrainment sessions. Universities and any institution of higher learning are regarded in high esteem as not only provides or knowledge and skills but also molders of behaviors. Based on this fact, it is imperative that the students that come out of the universities must have both the best understanding of reality as well as a general behavior change. Nonetheless, colleges in the United States of America continue to record low graduation rates, which vary across ethnic groups. This problem closely associates with the way the students carry out their social life and their general perception of the things that constitute entertainment as a leisure activity.
Methods in Conducting the Research
Using actual visits to the public places such as restaurants, and entertainment rooms around the Cornell University campus and interactions with the students, thus study determined different conception of what an entertainment means. In essence, each of the Cornel University students who randomly confided in me critical information about their entertainment lives had a personalized thought and belief about the composites of recreation. Review of the university profile and past occurrences exposed incidences of terrible student experiences leading to either debilitating harm of even deaths when out of the University on entertainment sprees.
Patterns Present in the Observations
From the anthropological study, at least three in every five students reported having used alcohol on a recreation day within or outside the campus. Furthermore, the students residing in the off-campus accommodation were more likely to engage in aggressive activities during entertainments such as fist fights, insulting and using different drugs including cigarettes and spirits. Virtually every student that responded to the interactive question defined entertainment as a time where people have an experience with their another side. Another side within this context means engaging in those activities, which one would not do if in the right senses. Therefore, for most Cornell University students, entertainment is a composite of unusual behavior, engaging in drugs and just doing the things that make them feel abnormal. An entertainment night or day for a Cornell student is a typical Halloween where what one considers impossible is made to happen.
Going into details about the activities carried out during an entertainment event, every student seems to be withdrawn from what they do. In essence, they appear to be uninformed about the motivation for their change of behavior from what is normal to a strange one at their leisure. Most of them find it comforting to give responses such as being aggressive during leisure time is not a unique thing. Everyone else would just like to be invincible because that is what it means to be entertained.
The students drink alcohol and become aggressive when out on free university sponsored entertainment events or on weekends when they break from the usual class activities and venture into various forms of entertainment including sporting events, parties and off campus frenzies. This study showed that the first year students believe that leisure involves having free time with friends to watch different enjoyable events such as movies, concerts, dances and even having an alcohol free in house party. Nonetheless, as the students progressed to higher levels, they show no concern about the use of alcohol and other drugs as part of the entertainment. This trend points to a conclusion that the more the students in Cornell University become senior, the more they develop a changing and skewed definition of entertainment and the things that should ideally constitute it. Therefore, a fourth-year student at Cornell University is likely to use drugs and become violent during a show that a first-year student.
The study also found out that the college students often engage in different activities during the weekdays. Some of these events ae non-leisure while others are leisure. However, the non-leisure activities are more than the serious ones during the week thus denying them time to enjoy themselves through entertainments and other forms of entertainment including responsible drinking. Due to this academic burden in the students, they perceive the weekends as a time for having fun and enjoyment through different forms of entertainments including using drugs that make them violent and unreasonable.
Preliminary Conclusions from the Research
University students define what constitute leisure and entertainment differently depending on what they do during such time. The more a student intends to engage in an antisocial activity during leisure or entertainment, the more likely that they will glorify practices such as indulgence in drugs and be violent during such activities. Furthermore, the more the university students feel part of the system the higher the chances that they will desist from developing a skewed conception of what needs to be done during in the context of the entertainment and leisure time. This fact is reflected by the fact that students living within the campus environment have a lower probability of socializing and changing the execrated outcomes of an entertaining session. Any social interventions needed to orient university students towards constructive behavior throughout their lifetime should be introduced at the early days of admission since it is only then that they are likely to be in their right minds to accept the true nature of social events. In essence, the more a student stays in the university or college, the higher the probability that they become usurped in the popular perceptions that they get adamant to change.
