Introduction

Exposure to technology or technology affects a person's social and cognitive developmental skills. Whenever the teenagers get glued into social media, they are affected psychologically as they lack the social skills. The internet is among the technological advancements which people appreciate. The social media is associated with adverse effects in an individual's life as they get access to every content on the social media platforms. For example, social media is associated with Facebook depression, stalking, anxiety, and cyberbullying. Facebook depression is experienced whenever a teenager feels inferior concerning their social media friends. Therefore, due to the diverse effects facilitated by social media, this paper will focus on an annotated bibliography concerning the negative impacts of social media on young teens/ adults.

After the studies were conducted, it was found out that social media possess various benefits and risks to the emotional and social development of teenagers. Therefore, through the use of this article, readers can obtain knowledge of how different social media sites affect the lives of young individuals.

The article indicates that the websites used for social interactions are termed as social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and My Space. Since these social media sites are used for communication and entertainment, the article states that parents or guardians should be aware of the social media platforms utilized by their children and teenagers. Therefore, reading this article helps an individual to know the importance of using pediatricians as they urge the guardians and parents to monitor the social media platforms, thus preventing various issues such as cyberbullying and sexting.

The use of social media channels provides an opportunity for enhancing social separations. The study conducted by Primack (et al., 2017) assessed the association that existed between the PSI and Social media usage. The study utilized a sample of 1787 United States adults that were aged between 19-32 years. After the survey was conducted, it was concluded that teenagers who have high social media users tend to feel socially isolated than those with lower social media use.

According to RAYSAC (2020), social media was to expand people's worldview, thus allowing them to stay connected with individuals that do not remain in their neighborhood. Teenagers feel that they can meet people and develop relationships and opportunities that are beyond them. Therefore, despite the benefits of social media platforms, they lead to teenage isolation as they cannot learn or practice social skills. Also, through these channels, the teenagers feel they are left out on various activities.
