Five Factors that Lead to Environmental Collapse

According to Jared Diamond, one of the critical triggers of societal collapse is the ecological problems faced by the inhabitants. It implies the destruction of environmental resources that such societies heavily relied on. Diamond refers to his kind of damage as ecological suicide that he identifies in five ways. Ecocide occurs through soil problems (salinization and erosion), deforestation, water management challenges, and overfishing, overhunting, effects of modified species on native species, increased per capita impact, and rapid population growth (Diamond, 11). Deforestation entails the cutting down of trees without planting new ones. Therefore, the area remains unoccupied, leading to soil erosion, and the inhabitants suffer drought or floods that wipe out the families. Population growth leads to dangerous habitation of a small city, which causes overdependence on available resources. Therefore, Diamond explains the relationship between the ecological factors of collapse and how each of them wipes out society (Diamond, 12). All the mentioned factors affect one another, and with no time, a community that was once rich and superior dies.

Drivers of Collapse in the Easter Island Civilization

The geographic position of Easter Island is a significant factor for its collapse. Unlike Fiji, where plants like coconut could grow, Easter Island is supposedly faced by soil problems. The soil is saline thus does not pose as the right place for farming (Diamond, 80). Also, the island is inhabitable by animals larger than insects except for chicken. The area is terrifically hot and cannot sustain the growth of plants or rearing of animals. Therefore, the ecocide of the place is first affected by the geographic position and the soil problems (Diamond, 81). Essentially, the erection of statutes that are so dominant on the island indicates that man had a role in the extinction of the society. Such statues require massive trees that have been cut down from the island for such reasons. The stones from the quarry are also a result of human activities. Thus, it is clear that the island has become extinct due to soil problems, deforestation, and mining activities.

Conclusively, the last islander on Easter sees that the life of inhabitants has become unbearable. The person reminisces on the human activities on the land that have caused the current menace. The last islander also reviews the geographical position of the island that gives it an agricultural disadvantage, unlike other Pacific islands like Fiji (Diamond, 82). As the person thinks about this, he or she thinks of the best way to live a sign of human existence. For this reason, one creates a monument or statue that shows the land was once fertile with resources and social activities and is quite a place to tour.
