Organizations develop strategically through the effort towards social cohesion among its members. Individuals from different social setting perceive the environment distinctively. This distinction results from the mental adaptability to the factors that affect the execution of tasks. Factors such as globalization and adoption of technology in organizations increase the need for socialization among individuals from different backgrounds. Globalization enables people from different regions and cultures to interact during travel and exchange of products, and ideas. Communication plays an essential role in the management of organizations, and it facilitates the exchange of culture and ideas. The need to pass the message to improve performance leads to the development of means and channels that facilitate communication. Effective leadership motivates the workforce through planning, organizing, controlling and leading. My paper will reflect upon the factors including social identity, cultural identity and leadership styles and their effect on my semester in the college.
My arrival at the College of Management presented a challenge due to the difference in personality among the other students and staff. The mental perception to socialize forced me to determine the type of friends I required during my stay at the college. With the constraint of different cultures and religions, establishing intrinsic characteristics such as tolerance and openness to differences helped me to establish a group of individuals who would suit the relation I needed. However, the location of residence hindered the stability of several relations as some individuals require consistent communication to develop a connection. I realised that my attachment to different individuals experienced difficulty due to the failure to understand their culture. This is because, while everyone considers their culture to be superior, I acted neutral and avoided any cultural influence. However, I noticed that some individuals conformed to the dominant group member's perception by acting similarly. I understand that conforming helps to reduce conflicts among individuals assimilating to a culture perceived to be exceptional.
The College of management offers education on the matters of leadership and the success achieved by the integration of social diversity for better performance. After reading a brochure on the College of Management, I realized the importance of professional knowledge on managing a diverse setup. The enrolment to the college proved to be a practical case for the problem I needed to solve in future. My intuition led me to assess the factors to encounter at the college, such as differences in race, religion, culture, and ideologies, as indicated on the college's brochure. Travelling to the college, I noted the variation among individuals. Adoption of globalization has increased the level of resettlement among communities. Therefore, I realized the need for the education among individuals on management to facilitate an insight on human perception towards social identity, cultural identity and the role of effective leadership skills on management.
Throughout the semester, I realized that the process of integrating with other students required a subconscious evaluation of my colleagues. According to the theory of social identity by Tajfel and Turner in 1979, an individual assesses the environment by dividing the social status into three categories including distinction through groups, developing a habit that promotes harmony with other members of the setting, and exclusion from social groups with different characteristics. By identifying the attributes of each, I assessed the religion, tolerance and interest in social activities of other students in the college, therefore, making it easy to approach others and strike a conversation and indulge in other activities as a group.
I avoided individuals that I considered hostile and different, regarding preferences and reasoning to avert a struggling relation. By evaluating the lessons taught, I realised that individuals perceive leadership differently as some showed the need to follow the instructions of a group to conform to cultural identification. I realized that I disapprove of control from others and I believe in transformational leadership skills. Recognizing that I am an introvert, the need for people's approval presented less effect on the decisions I made. However, the need to transform the perception among individuals led to the significance of interaction among individuals to determine the factors that promote positive influence by conformation to different ideas. With the understanding provided during the study, I realized the need for a study on the impact resulting from the social factors affecting the performance of an organization. This helps to clarify the instruments used to measure performance based on satisfaction resulting from social identity, cultural identity, and mode of leadership applied in an organization.
Conclusion
All in all, the study on identity differentiation helped me to maintain harmony with my peers and the community members. The evaluation of personal differences helped to provide clarity on the social factors that promote cohesion, while cultural identity created the importance to conform in a foreign environment to avoid conflict. While social identity fosters the interaction of individuals from different backgrounds, cultural identity facilitates the development of habits among a social group. The identities have helped to motivate me to pursue with the management career to promote an effective workforce that appreciates harmony through acknowledgement of the identities.
