Introduction
Risk management refers to the strategies implemented to deal with or impact probable threats or opportunities occurring at a degree that may negatively or positively impact the organization's goals and objectives (Lambert, 2010). Risk management is aimed at attaining beneficial outcomes; however, the uncertainty of the risks predisposes organizations to potential negative consequences. Besides being uncertain and unpredictable, risk also have a varying degree of tolerance. Some risks may result in manageable losses while others may cause an ultimate halt to the activities of the organization. Therefore, the uncertain nature of the future and degree of impact is what motivates the implementation of strategies that can account for particular outcomes through an analysis of the past and existing measures. An effective risk management plan should therefore effectively inform the stakeholders of both the potential benefits and losses in the event of a risk occurrence (Taleb, Goldstein, and Spitznagel, 2009). The risk management plan of Shining Star Hoops is analyzed to determine its effectiveness and preparedness for risk events and devise ways (also referred to as "Red flags") to deal with such outcomes.
Organization Description
Overview of the organization
Shining Star Hoops is a developmental program focused on providing high-level basketball training throughout the year. The academy focuses on individual skills and abilities development and how these individuals function in a team setting as indicated in their teaching philosophy (Appendix 1). The academy has managed to develop next level skills for more than 1500 youths through the 25 basketball clinics conducted at various campuses such as the Texas A&M University and the University of Texas. The academy focuses on the professionally, mentally, and physically preparedness regarding skill, conditioning workouts, and knowledge of the game that is of the highest quality in the industry. The athletes are thus prepared for daily development, training camps, a return to competitive basketball overseas play and even NBA pre-draft workouts. Besides being a motivation for attaining next level play, the academy also offers training as a prerequisite for a healthy lifestyle for the youth.
Overview of services provided
The athlete program implemented by shining star Hoops is aimed at emphasizing on the fundamental skills and techniques that make an athlete average and mold them to greatness through encouragement and enthusiasm and passionate environment created by the coaches. During the training camps and scheduled weekly training each athlete is developed to add depth in their play by being eased in the role of both a defensive and offensive player with exceptional passing skills and can see the floor. Ball handlings skills of the athletes are also refined by emphasizing on transforming the athletes more intensive and focused players who can exceed their potential on the field.
Overview of clientele served
The most significant number of the clients at SSH academy are children whose playing ability needs to be further developed. The potential athlete has to show up for play and training on time as the coaches prepare them for excellence in basketball and also how to keep up with their competition in the sport. The instructional sessions established by the certified coaches utilize the player's natural skills and abilities. Children from as low as four years to 20 years of age still playing under the AAU forms the potential recruiting base for SSH academy. The program further guides the youths through their junior high, boys club, high school and college with the aim of utilizing their talents and youth efficiently and becoming positive embers of the society.
Organizational structure
SSH academy offers fundamental skill enhancement training that is designed by former seasoned collegiate and high school coaches. The organization has a director William Clay, who is also the founder and head coach. The head coach is followed in the hierarchy with the assistant coaches who are former NBA players Justin Wilson and Christopher Jordan. Both associate coaches report to the head coach. From the assistant coaches is other staff members and trainers.
Red Flags: SSH academy needs to separate coaching and management tasks. For example, the administrative roles assigned to the main coach as the director hinders his full commitment to the coaching aspect which is the central goal of the organization. The overall number of assistant coaches is inadequate to serve a full basketball squad let alone an entire camp training with athletes of varying ages.
Financial Resources
SSH academy operates privately funded programs. The parents of athletes and other private individuals and companies contribute funds that support the programs. The amount of funds varies depending on the specific schedules. The daily routines from Sunday's and Tuesdays (held at Lutheran South Academy and Gloria Day Lutheran respectively) are approximately charged at 35$ per athlete. On the other hand, camps that are meant to extend for days, are charged higher and assigned a specific deadline after which the price increases again to limit last-minute sign-ups. The payments usually cater to the athlete's refreshments. However, during camps, the privilege may be extended to transportation back home.
Donations and partnerships also form a major funding program for Shining Star Hoops. Some of the Corporate partners of the program are Priority One (real estate's company), Bayshore Medical center, Rudys, Regions, College Prospects of America and Abes Cajun. The money from the partners plays a critical role in securing young talents, paying for armature leagues, acquire equipment's, maintain existing equipment's, paying the staff and many more.
Red flags: SSH academy should ensure to establish well-elaborated naming and operational rights with their private partners to protect their activities from possible entitlement risks. Employing public funding techniques can also help in building a bigger and more competitive team at SSH academy.
Personnel
Hiring Procedures
If SSH academy feels that there is an opportunity that can be filled by someone who adds value to their services and is dedicated to improving player talents, the right individuals (search companies) are involved in approaching the individual or their agents. Before having an interview with the potential coach, the search company does a thorough digging (discreetly and quickly) to gather the relevant data justifying the fit of the candidate with the requirements of SSH academy. One of the primary qualities that guide SSH academy that must be met before hiring is the commitment to improving player performance through mentorship. During the direct or third-party meetings with the search company, the potential coach is interviewed. After the interview and vetting, and the position is accepted by the candidate the necessary documents are signed, and the newly hired coach can begin working immediately.
Red flag: The hiring procedures should be dedicated to a human resource specialist who will be responsible in conducting interviews before the candidates meeting with the director. The latter helps combine high-performance indicators, economic value and proper documentation throughout the process.
Job Descriptions
The job description is given to the prospective individuals (in the case of coaches) who are shortlisted by the search company. During the official interviews headed by the director of SSH academy, the final documents describing the specifications of the tasks assigned and contract details are handed over to the coaches.
Evaluation and Discipline Process
The head coach is tasked with the task of carrying out evaluation procedures personally concerning the guidelines and rules of the game, tactics, equipment and court specifications. He coordinates all levels of evaluation of the tasks carried out by the other coaches and recommends on the best was of attaining player safety, sports instruction and communication. The coaches also have to be familiar with the NBA and US Basketball guidelines which must be adhered to at all times. The evaluation phase is continuous as the director spontaneously allocates the tasks to prepare Practice Schedules, plans and roasters. Dressing code is among the primary practices that must be adhered to by the coaches at all times as they serve as role models to athletes of different ages and gender.
Complaints
In case of any complaints from all the stakeholder or member of the public regarding SSH academy, the contacts of the head coach and director are availed at the academy's site. The complaint is then analyzed concerning how it highlighted the weaknesses of the training program and the solution to such inadequacies by the complainer are reviewed. The director reassures all the stakeholders that their input will be considered.
Red Flag: To improve their transparency and accountability SSH academy should implement a more comprehensive and effective complain strategy. Contacting the director may result in the subjectivity of the ay the complaints are handled or even possible loss of the information due to his busy schedule. Part of the senior management can form an effective committee to handle the claims. A complain form (Appendix 5) can further help in enhancing the communication between management and the affected parties.
Training
The training workshops are usually held for all coaches at SSH academy where both athlete and coaches handbooks are analyzed. For individual evaluation and training individual session meetings are generally held by the director/head coach. Knowledge from attended coaching clinics by some of the staff members is also shared during the coaches meetings. Coaching certificates from elites in the industry such as Gannon Barker are also acquired through SSH academy coaches' attendance.
Red flag: Despite being former NBA players with the highest ratings, the coaches also need to be certified in other training procedures vital in dealing with youth such as substance and abuse training, CPR certification and; leadership and communication skills.
Nondiscrimination Policy
Discrimination against the coaches and hiring of assistant staff members is also highly prohibited and on a close observation by the director. The policy is further elaborated and enforced as per The US equal opportunity commission's (EEOC).
Harassment of a student by another student or by a teacher or other staff member is a violation of school policy. Harassment based on national origin, race, sexual orientation, marital status, gender identity, sex, religion, or disability by either a staff member or an athlete is highly prohibited. All coaches are given the mandate to sensitize the athletes on the importance of appreciating each other's uniqueness. Failure to adhere to the anti-discrimination policy may result to complete termination of program contract.
State and Federal Employment Laws
SSH academy complies with the state and camps policies as they are extensive and broadly accepted. ACA-accreditation requirements also guide the appropriate standards of health and quality provided by SSH academy employees. More information on the applicable laws and policies can be obtained from ACA's public policy position statement on Camp Safety. SSH academy has also advanced its search in the exploration and provision of quality training and development services for employees as stipulated by state and federal laws.
