The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers the essential medical services offered by a health professional. The OHIP reduces the cost of accessing health by making some of the health services including eye examination to be free of charge. Generally, OHIP focuses on reducing medical costs for individuals who are below twenty-five years of age. The health providers working with abnormal people face different concerns that limit their ability to care for their safety including the requirements to uphold confidentiality and to offer services without discrimination. Since the medically ill individuals are not declared guilty in a court of law, and they cannot make any reparations for their actions, the OHIP ensures that the psychologist's functioning is not severely after facing attacks from their patients.
The rollout of the insurance plan for all nurses is vital in the provision of health needs of a high number of psychologists who offer services to mentally ill patients. Currently, a high number of factors lead to mental issues such as genetics, negative experience during childhood and individual factors including low self-esteem. Nearly, one person in every five Canadians has a mental disorder. Moreover, the assessments for mental disorders occur periodically, and they can only be conducted by a psychiatrist or a psychologist (Vigo, Thornicroft & Atun, 2016). As a result, a high number of numbers of psychologists come into contact with mentally ill individuals.
The provision of health care insurance would increase the health outcomes for both the psychologists and the clients. Different workers provide counseling and case management needs to the mentally ill patients, and they can all be covered under the OHIP provision for the psychologist (Vigo et al., 2016). The different health providers include recreational therapists, occupational therapists, and social workers.
The psychologists working with mentally ill patients face significant risks from attack from the patients that may lead them to fall sick. It is difficult for the mentally ill individuals to control their actions since an overwhelming force drives most of them (Fleet & Kocovski, 2017). The risk of sustaining injuries is higher among the nurses who are psychologists who are physically weak since the mentally ill clients easily overpower them. The provision of the Ontario Health Insurance plan eases the burden faced by psychologists while assessing medical care for injuries resulting from their duty.
The legal codes absolve the mentally ill individuals from any liability arising from their actions. It is argued that the mentally ill individuals lack discernment; they are unaware that their deeds are wrong and some cannot control their conduct. After commitment of an offense, the abnormal individuals are taken to the hospital instead of being taken to court (Fleet & Kocovski, 2017). The provision of the Ontario Health Insurance plan would act as a means for compensation for the psychologists who suffer in the hands of their clients.
The legal codes relating to confidentiality prevent the psychologists from taking any necessary measures to protect themselves from harm caused by the clients. The health professional s are required to ensure the privacy of information regarding abnormal patients. It is a legal requirement for nursing professionals not to offer any information about the patient to other doctors in the facility unless in instances where legal requirements necessitate the disclosures. Therefore, nurses are likely to keep most of the information confidential including information regarding violent tendencies on the part of the patient (Fleet & Kocovski, 2017). A nurse is required to treat all new patients, and they may not seek information about the violent impulses of the patient from the previous practitioners. As a result, the implementation of the plan regarding the provision of OHIP would promote the implementation of the confidentiality provisions.
The legal rules require the psychologists to offer services to all regardless of the nature of the patients. The truth is mentally ill patients present more significant risks compared to other patients requiring counseling help (Fleet & Kocovski, 2017). The provision of OHIP leaves an implication of the government acknowledgment of the health needs of the psychologists who offer selfless service to improve the health of other people in the society.
The assessment of Insanity in a court of law for the inclusion of an insanity defense depends on testimonies from witnesses and family members. Clients may attack a health practitioner at will and still benefit from the insanity defense in the court. It is difficult to determine the extent of a client recovery after developing a mental problem. Coaching by other intimates and the advice from the lawyer might allow a defendant to get released from the criminal justice system after conducting an attack on a psychologist (Yesufu-Udechuku et al., 2015). The OHIP may come in handy for such psychologists at least to ease the financial burden since they may be huge medical and legal fees about the event.
The judicial proceedings related to the insanity justice take a long time before the conclusion, and the compensation from the aggressor cannot be relied upon to pay the medical fees of the aggrieved psychologist. There are different medical examinations included in a case where the defendant is alleged to have a mental illness. The judges need to be supplied with a medical exam report regarding the extent of the defendant competency to stand a trial. In other instances, the judges need clarification that the defendant will consult with the lawyers with a significant degree of rational understanding (Fleet & Kocovski, 2017). Even after an abnormal person pleading guilty, the judges may not allow the person to compensate the victim where they feel that the defender lacks the required reasonability that impairs their competency to go through the trial.
The provision of OHIP will ensure that the psychologist can continually access care at old age. Dealing with the mentally ill individuals contributes to continuous exposure to stressors that may affect a nurse later in life. The OHIP ensures that nurses can access the required medications while undergoing care at home (Statement Organization, 2018) A combination of psychological problems and old age undermines the quality of life of previous psychologists. Importantly, their families experience continued financial burden due to their long-term care needs.
The provision of OHIP to registered nurses ensures that psychologists receive podiatrist services for the treatment of injuries sustained during their line of duty. Though surgery services are not covered under OHIP, the cover caters for up to $135 per individual yearly, and the amount eases the financial burden for the psychologists (Statement Organization, 2018). The OHIP also provides the psychologists with an opportunity to receive care from recognized hospitals due to the coverage of some costs including x-ray expenses.
Conclusion
To sum up, the law offers protection for the mentally ill individuals absolving them from any liability arising from their actions. Therefore, the healthcare professionals may end up suffering from attacks from their patients the court may not authorize their compensation by aggressors who are deemed to be mentally ill. The provision of health insurance acts as a workable remedy for the psychologists who suffer medical problems in their line of duty. Vitally, health insurance decreased the financial burden for the psychologist families, and it also ensures less discrimination in the provision of psychologist services.
