Politician Spouses and Scandals Essay

There have been reports of spouses getting involved in scandals and them receiving condemnation with their families not going unnoticed. Some people believe that the spouses should take some level of responsibility in their partner's activities. Most of these scandals involve extramarital affairs thrusting their partner into the public limelight as in the case of Bill Cosby. The issue of corruption begs the question of whether the family members were aware and to what extent they have benefited from the loot. Whether the souse should be blamed or take responsibility remains to be debatable within the masses. This paper will be justifying why spouses should not be held accountable for their partner's misdeeds and that the public should consider them a fair game in reporting on scandals.

The most common family is the nuclear unit that may likely have two or three children who are bound together and close to each other in most of their activities. The members play various roles as evidence of the values attached to this union (Mandell). There is commitment, love, unity and team spirit among other benefits that are valued in such a setup. There are times that the families go for holidays and their wellbeing appears to be dependent on this structure especially for the children. Sometimes one of the family members may suspect that one of the members is involved in a scandal that could threaten their unity. In such cases, they may take steps to clean up and hide the same from the rest for fear of the consequences.

The day to day life for politicians may be quite involving, and he or she may end up not striking the required balance between serving the community and the family. The spouse may be involved in other private matters away from the glaring public life that is prone to exposure by the media. Mandell argues that there are people who do not like such type of life and they will choose to purposely stay away as they prefer to remain in one that is private and quiet. With such being the case they may not be in a position to know what their partner is up to and eventually, when a scandal occurs, they will ready to stand by them. In this context, they need to be absolved of any responsibility knowing that when the partner is way, there is little that will indicate that they are up to no good.

Politicians are people who are ambitious and will be targeting to get higher up the ladder. The individual may want to seek re-election to the same position, opt for a higher one or want to leave a legacy. It will be quite tricky and be challenging for the other partner to wish him anything that will interfere with this process (Mandell). They also know that this being their life they are prone to getting enemies who may set them up for a downfall and hence they will always understand.

The couple must be living together and sharing a lot with them. They cannot pretend not to be aware of each other's dealings. Under this relationship, Mandell observes that it will be argued out that they are beneficiaries of any underhand dealings that their partner may be involved in. There are also cases where the partners act as their partner's campaign managers and after getting into public office, they continue playing an active role in their civic life.

Conclusion

For the sake of their role in the family and its wellbeing, it will be difficult if not impossible for partners to stand against each other in case of scandals. They would not like it to appear like they made a wrong choice when they exchanged their vows. It is not proper to use the basis of them sharing their lives as grounds for one of them to be held accountable for the misdeeds of the partner. People should respect the marriage institution and avoid pushing the other partner not taking the blame for the one who is involved and in public life.
