Introduction
In a quick overturn of events, against all odds - polls and surveys, President Trump emerged as the winner in the 2016 US presidential election. During his campaigns, President Trump accused media channels of giving him less coverage to sabotage his presidential bid. From direct media rants, immigration ridicules to issues regarding bribes by Jessica Drake and sexual harassment by Stormy Daniels, President Trump has endured more than most of the US past presidents. Halfway through his first term, the US president has managed to stay relevant despite all accusations besieging his left and right. This paper presents unique traits of President Trump that has enabled him thrust through the tsunami of media disapprovals, the international outcry by international groups (UNESCO and NATO) and consistent ridicule by Democrats. Trump is a bold leader, one who goes for his goals regardless of how many people, NGOs or international groups disapprove him. Even though he did not manage to repeal Obamacare, he made significant changes to it, changes that appealed to most Republicans. Using the Green-Stein rubric, the paper evaluates President Trump as a unique president of the United States of America.
Organizational Capacity
Before the entrance to politics, Trump was (is) a billionaire entrepreneur dealing in the real estate industry. However, little is known about Trump's organizational policies because he was a private entrepreneur appearing in limelight occasionally. His organization and management skills can be thus far elaborated based on the management of his political campaigns and his employees in White House. An article by Trump's Leadership Ruined Trust Among the White House Staff. Are You Doing the Same at Your Company?", "The alleged chaos in the White House begs the question, are other American workplaces equally (Huhman, 2018) indicates that Trump leadership style is chaotic and cannot be described as per existing organizational theories and concepts. Sometimes, the President does overtly unreasonable things by delivering official White House messages through tweets. Other times, the President sits with the G8 countries discussing economic issues and increasing tariffs on imported goods (aluminum and steel) while reprimanding countries that attempt to retaliate. Such autocratic behavior as described by (De Cremer, 2006) is characteristic of an individual that does not accommodate the views of the others.
Nonetheless, looking at how President Trump makes his investments, one can perceive him as a rational decision-maker. Most of his business decisions are guided by conservative business concepts. For instance, when he purchases properties, Trump ensures that they have less of an upside provided they are safer investment choices. In regard to this, Trump makes calculated risks when doing business. Case Study in Chaos: How Management Experts Grade a Trump White House (Stewart, 2017) note that Trump proclaimed himself as an organizational genius and that he will offer a smooth transition in the White House. However, that is far from the Truth. Stewart (2017) points out that the President chaotic management style has often placed some of his employees in the White House at embarrassing positions. For instance, House Speaker Ryan praised the immigration policy proposed by the President but after strong criticisms from all sides of the political divide, Ryan redacted his comments citing that it was too early to roll out a comprehensive immigration policy framework (Stewart, 2017). The White House presents Trump a complex organization with two Houses to oversee, the executive branch to head and Judicial branch to rely on legal matters. Complex organization managers surround themselves with experts in every department to make them successful in their endeavors. As a result, a top manager is open to criticism and ready to accept that there are other people with greater expertise knowledge in certain arenas (Augier & Teece, 2006). Trump Organization which is currently headed by his son, Trump Jr. presents a linear organization with family at the helm, making major business decisions. The White House is complex and requires a relationship between various groups and sometimes even the opposers to be able to establish a rational decision. In regard to this evaluation, President Trump capacity as an organizational leader depicts that of an autocratic leader. Therefore, the President still has a learning curve to endure to learn how to properly manage complex organizations by recognizing the input of every employee and accepting that he cannot know everything. Probably, Trump administrative business skills do not apply in the realm of politics.
Political Skill
Talking of politics, Trump's political skills are applaudable for two reasons: first, no one imagined he would emerge as the Republican presidential candidate and secondly few people in the global level did not imagine that Trump would vanquish Hillary Clinton. Having served as the Secretary of State and wife to former US president Bill Clinton, Clinton's experience in the political arena and management of the country's affairs at national and international level were superb. On the other hand, Trump was not active in politics until 2016. It was decades of experience versus months of experience. With unbelievable odds, Trump managed to emerge as the winner of the 2016 US election. Forbes Magazine ranks President Trump as the 3rd most powerful person on earth, not because of his political skills but because he commands the worlds biggest military and an economic powerhouse (Percy, 2018). Additionally, the magazine ranks him the 766th richest person in the world has achieved his status via his investments in real estate and the TV reality show "The Apprentice". The two capacities: billionaire and TV star gives Trump substantial political skills that include charisma, electrifying emotional appeal and ability to connect to the souls of his supporters (Bershidsky, 2016). The greatest political skill demonstrated by Trump is the ability to give confidence and assurance to his supporters that he is the only one who can represent them by "making America great again". Trump's sentiments, although sneered and derided by opponents and other groups, often resonated with the innate beliefs of his conservative supporters. Trump managed to connect with the needs of Republicans and presented them with a slogan that meant dealing with American issues first then address the sufferings of the world.
