Rhetorical Analysis of a Speech
Maya Angelou’s poem, “On the Pulse of the Morning”, albeit explicitly written for Bill Clinton’s presidential inauguration in 1993 underlies a universal message resonating beyond the US 9History Speeches, 1993). The long all-encompassing poem is not afraid of looking back at the past dark times but is aimed at pushing forward into full hope for the future. It delves on both philosophical passages and historical elements as it urges everyone to strive for the best in wisely sharing the planet. The poem, therefore, derives its inspiration from Negro spirituals in underscoring the fact that humans are viable into changing for the better as well as working with nature as they learn from the past. That great things are likely to be accomplished together despite the differences.
The speaker also builds her character, an appeal to pathos in the quest of persuading its audience through reason in the realms of freedom, growth and evolution. Besides, the poem's significant themes of hope and courage, coupled with the messages of faith, unity and determination emblems the ethos appeal to the audience in convincing them that they are likely to change for the better. That is through the speaker’s reasoning that we can all make a difference as every day confers new changes for a new beginning (History Speeches, 1993). The use of objects of nature in the poem in tracing the historical marks in answering the present and predicting the future through religions, race and culture underscores the logos used by the speaker to persuade the audience with facts and reason. That is in addition to her ethos and pathos appeals.
The primary purpose of the poem is to convince the audience that they should stand with their heads high, just like the natural landmarks instead of hiding under the shadows. In a nutshell, the excellent points that Maya makes are the urging of mankind=d to feel the inner strength and stand up for a better future. She also encourages people to hold on to their dreams in the palms of their hands and do their best to make their dreams come to pass.
