Although it is the role of the government to ensure that people act according to the Canadian laws and as per the Criminal Code, I believe that the state should not be concerned about privacy issues in consensual relationships between individuals over 21 years old. Instead, the state should focus on ensuring that different individuals are protected regardless of their sexual orientation to eliminate events of harassment and discrimination. Also, there is a need to continue distinguishing relationships based on sexual orientation since different groups need to be protected. This includes the introduction of various laws and codes that foster true equality between groups to avoid discrimination and stereotyping based on sexual orientation. For instance, the bill on the protection for gender identity in the Canadian Human Rights Act and Criminal Code can be strengthened by including specific groups such as the LGBTQ community. Also, more definitions and interpretations should be included in the Criminal Code to ensure that the law is clear on what is legal and what is not legal. However, some exceptions could be involved in issues of sex discrimination and gender-based violence.

Response to Ashleigh

In Ashleigh's response, she provides great insight concerning equality and individual rights. She clearly outlines her views that the government should not be involved in personal relationships. Ashleigh's argument about the importance of promoting inclusivity and equity for the different gender groups is something I agree with as the government should be involved it that. Although Ashleigh gives strong arguments on this issue of rights and true equality, she does not provide exceptions concerning the involvement of the state in distinguishing relationships based on sexual orientation.

Module 11 Response

As workplaces evolve, so should the workplace policies, particularly the laws involving employment equity. In as much as the Employment Equity Act tries to represent designated and minority occupational groups in their workplaces, more should be done to ensure that contract workers are protected within the act as they are numerous employment equity laws that do not apply to them. First, the Employment Equity Act should be revised in such a manner that each group is protected where every workplace should adhere to the human rights standards ensuring employment equity and legal protection. Also, the laws could be revised by advancing the Employment Equity Act to accommodate a requirement where every worker, either a permanent employee or short-term employee, as long as they included in the payroll, should receive similar benefits in terms of protection, rights, and equality. With the increase of contract workers, the employment laws should ensure that each province in Canada adheres to the set policies by involving various institutions such as the labor unions in Canada.

Response to Alexandra K.

Alexandra K provides vital information about the role of employment laws in protecting employees and promoting equality in the workplace. The post is exceptionally informative and analytical as Alexandra K delivers examples of how the Canadian government should amend and revise employment laws to strengthen legal protection, especially regarding the increasing trend of contract workers. Furthermore, Alexandra K clarifies on what can be done within the Canadian provinces to ensure that minority and other occupational groups are respected and protected from employment injustices or inequalities. As Alexandra K argues, the involved bodies and legislators need to allow for change based on the developing trends, among other technological shifts. This is a brilliant response I would recommend to anyone.
