Several texts are multimodal, and this is where connotation is communicated via the amalgamation of several modes. Modes comprise spoken language, and patterns, along with the written word of meaning that includes spatial, audio, gestural, visual, and tactile. Multimodal texts comprise of comics, posters, textbooks, picture books, and graphic novels, where connotation is conveyed to readers by different combinations of visual, spatial, and written language. There are two different types of multimodal texts, and these include digital multimodal and live multimodal texts. Digital multimodal texts include e-posters, numeral stories, simulations, and flicks. Live documents include dance, oral storytelling, and performance. Each mode has a unique semiotic resource to use when creating meaning. For instance, in a visual mode, people, places, along objects presentation, are conveyed using visual semiotic resource choices such as line, shape, symbols, as well as size (Victoria State Government, 2018). Still, the written language conveys this meaning by sentences using adjectives and noun groups, which are typed or written on a screen or paper. The aim of this paper is to discuss the various techniques used by composers in multimodal texts to enable responders to understand scenes, relationships, events, and people.

In the Shoe-Horn Sonata Play, there are various techniques used by the composer. These techniques are vital since they enable responders in multiple ways. The first technique used was the spoken language. Spoken language exists before the written language, and this helps in understanding what the author intends. For example, in the play, John Misto said that he had no power to create a memorial, so he decided to write a play Effective use of spoken language aids people in their interpersonal association at work and home (Victoria State Government, 2018). After watching various plays, and films, or even reading written materials such as poetry and other materials, the techniques used may teach people what is right and what is wrong for them to do while at home or other places. It also improves people’s ability to be an active speaker in public.

The second technique used by composers is written language. The author in this play decided to write the play because he was not capable of building a memorial. Alternatively, a written play can be read by several people compared to the people he can reach and present his play. Written language technique is vital for people who cannot communicate, but want to present something to the public (Victoria State Government, 2018). Apart from some actions, gestures, and facial expressions, the composers can write what they intend to pass to the public for the people to understand. Having a speaking challenge does not mean that one cannot as well change society. Written language is also vital for the memorial. Sometimes they prefer using this technique to spoken language because the reader can refer to it another time in case; he forgets the content in it. Spoken language is not suitable for reference because if the reader forgets what the composer said, it becomes hard to remember, and the message may be distorted in the process.

Furthermore, composers can use symbols as their technique. Symbols are used to express certain thoughts as well as social structures while presenting aspects of a specific culture. They carry meaning, which depends on the cultural background of an individual. In Shoe-Horn Sonata, play symbols were used to present the Australian background culture, especially those who were involved in World War II (Victoria State Government, 2018). The play was inspired by Australians’ real-life experiences since every culture has different symbols as well as behaviors depending on the region.

Conclusion

In conclusion, composers have changed the world in various ways. They play a vital role in improving society using their plays, songs, stories, and many other reading materials. They used different techniques to pass their message, and, in most cases, these techniques are vital for catching the reader’s attention. They are also crucial for references since it becomes hard for the listeners to forget what the composer said.
