Introduction
In this particular image, there are many soldiers dressed in black and covered fully to their faces such that one cannot detect them. One of the soldiers can completely be spotted carrying a gun a sign to symbolize that they are there to carry out their duties as ordered to ensure that those that follow or support the Israel way are captured for execution. In this image also a man has been covered his head using a bag by the soldiers. This man depicts the situation whereby the soldiers capture one of the supporters. It indicates that the soldiers are working for a force known as Hamas that is against people in support of the Israel way. People are also trying to protest from this outrageous behaviour of the soldiers as shown in the image. They are trying to seek justice for the captured ones since one faces death upon supporting the Israel way.
Identify and Describe Three Objects or Elements In Image 2 (Caravaggio Painting) That Function Symbolically
In this picture, one can see a faint amount of light from the left side, and on the right side, there is also light coming from a lantern. The lantern is competing with the much darkness that overpowers the doings and the persons in the picture. The light and the darkness in this image can also symbolize the truth or the word of Jesus Christ versus the disbelief by the Jews who were capturing him at the moment sent by their master. Based on this perspective, one can adequately conclude that the entire moment in this image is derived from the holy Gospel of Mark (14:44) that shows clearly how Judas was to betray Jesus. It states the actual words of Judas to the soldiers that the person that he kisses is the person that they are looking for. The kiss in this image symbolizes the betrayal of Jesus by Judas. A kiss is viewed as a sign of love, but in this image, it clearly shows the sellout of Jesus. This caption is just a print of the moment of sellout since one cannot see the background of the scene where it occurs; thus Caravaggio tries to suggest that everyone betrays Jesus. This can be seen clearly whereby a soldier is trying to cling on john the evangelist cloth so that he may not escape the scene.
What Might be the 'Use' Of Image 1?
This portrait efficiently depicts the actions similar to the efforts of Hamas who executed eighteen persons who were suspected of collaborating with Israel. The same killings that happened in which this picture shows clearly that most of the events in it are influenced politically between two groups of people who are supporting Israel and the ones that are against the support of Israel ways of doing things.
Given What You Have Learned about the Baroque Period What Might Have Been the Caravaggio's Use of Image 2?
This image is used by Caravaggio to depict the act of betrayal of Jesus by Judas. He kisses Jesus as a sign to show the temple soldiers that He is the person they are looking for. In this picture, we tend only to see half of the bodies of the persons that are in it which include: John the evangelist who tries to flee from the scene after Jesus has been betrayed, but one of the soldiers cling on his garment. The characters are paraded in a dark environment in which the setting becomes mysterious. The primary source of light in this picture is not indisputable, but one can see the light that is emanating from a lantern held by one of the persons.
Given the Meaning that the Symbols Used in Both of These Images Convey, or Their Potential "Use" as Artworks Independent of Each Other, Why Might the Editors of the Wall Street Journal have Chosen to Include Them in the Same Issue? What Content (Message or Meaning) Might The Juxtaposition of These Two Images Be Creating Or Bolstering, and HOW Do The Visual Symbols In Each Image Connect To Generate That Message?
In both scenes, we observe the act of betrayal where the other persons included in the image can't do anything as the victims suffer from the wrath of the soldiers. In both themes, there is a dark theme depicted in it. The soldiers in the first image are dressed in black, and their faces can't be recognized. In the second image we get to see one person using a lantern to increase the visibility of the scene and the other source is not clearly shown but it illuminates John and Jesus faces. In both, we all learn about the act of demeaning witness as events occur.
