Introduction
The bank of Elmore had recently engineered a new safety deposit box and Mr. Adams, requested everyone present to inspect it. Everyone entered into the banking room through high carved oak railings. Jimmy, who is to marry Mr. Adams's daughter accompanied them holding a case. 'Good day to you all' Jimmy greeted the clerks. "Good day sir" they answered in uniform and seemed very happy to have received greatings from a handsome man who was the future husband to Annabel. Jimmy would be allowed to go almost everywhere because of his engagement to Annabel. He put down his case then Annabel full of energy and a very lively youth puts on the hut belonging to Jimmy and picks the case up. "Wouldn't I make a nice drummer?" She asked. “My! Ralph, how heavy it is. Feels like it was full of gold bricks." “Lot of nickel-plated shoe-horns in there, that I'm going to return. Thought I'd save express charges by taking them up. I'm getting economical." Jimmy said calmly.
The safety box had a new licenced door that was held strong with three steel fasteners parallel to a knob. The vault also had a clock that had not been set yet. The handling of the door was explained to Mr. Spencer, who did not show much interest on the illustrations. Agatha and Mary, two of the children seemed very happy to see the clock, a knob and metal that is shining. "Look!" Agatha said to May pointing at the knob of the vault. The children had a stare at vault in a mischievous manner smiling at each other. "This clock looks funny," Agatha told May as they moved towards the door and started playing with the steel bolts. People did not pay close attention to the children and they went on with their activities. "Too tight" May told Agatha as she tried to push the knob. While the children continued their fun activity, Ben Price entered and and supported his chin using his elbow in a casual way in between the railings. "How can I help you sir?" Asked the teller. "I am just waiting for someone I know. I don't need any assistance." Ben replied and then leaned back on his elbow. Suddenly, there were screams heard from women which brought almost everything to a standstill. While the kids were on their fun and games, Agatha had been accidentally locked inside the vault by May, something that was not expected by the elder people present.
May had seen Mr. Adams demonstrate how to turn the combination knob and shot the bolts"The door can't be opened," the elderly banker whimed after he had rushed to open for the kid. "The clock hasn't been wound nor the combination set," he added. Out of fright, the child's mother began screaming.“Hush!" Mr. Adam said while raising a shaky hand.“All be quiet for a moment. Agatha!” he shouted. "Listen to me." The room was silent and all they could hear was a low sound of a kid inside the safe box having a lot of fear. "My precious darling!" Agatha's mother whose fear could be seen rising every moment wailed. “She will die of fright! Open the door! Oh, break it open! Can’t you men do something?” "There isn’t a man nearer than Little Rock who can open that door. My God! Spencer, what shall we do? That child—she can’t stand it long in there. There isn’t enough air, and, besides, she’ll go into convulsions from fright” Mr Adams said in a trembling voice. All that could be seen in people's faces as they moved across the room was fear with a little hope.
