Introduction
Diversity makes people believe in national cohesion and unity. When matters of diversity are being discussed, the Native Americans are always not mentioned. This paper outlines why Native Americans are rarely spoken about in the context of diversity and the techniques an HR can use to hire more Natives in a company.
The main reason why native Americans are seldom discussed in the context of diversity is mainly because of their firm traditions tied to cultural faiths and religion. The modern society has alienated it because of its beliefs that seems irrelevant in the contemporary world of diversified technology. The natives, such as Inuit or even Aleut, are still living in some ancient houses shaped like domes, made from timber, and ice blocks towards the north. The primary dressing is still mainly skin from the seal. The Inuits are primarily related to the long open boats known as kayaks. The refusal of the Natives to adopt modernity has made them isolated by entire America.
Another reason for this is the corrupt relationship between the government and the natives. There has been a historical problem between the natives and the US government. According to history, during the start of the 20th century, there were at least 250,000 Native Americans a tiny portion of the population (James, 2015). The fact that they lived in reserves made them have limited self-governance. Their argument with the government can be defined as the greed by the government to own their fertile land by deceiving them to move out. Policies were created to attempt and drive them out by force to no success. The succession treaties were not honored by the government, making them engage in a defiance war. This issue is part of the reasons why Native Americans are seldom spoken about in the context of diversity.
Finally, the Natives have been alienated because of several factors, such as their inability to access excellent health care facilities and their health care problems that are genetically inherited. They have been considered to have a deficient immune system that has made them prone to new diseases that keep emerging (James, 2015). Native Americans face a lot of racism from society. Non-natives have always admitted ever meeting natives in their routine life chores. Many people do not want to recognize their existence, and some social and recreational areas have erected racial notices, preventing the natives from accessing their premises. The language discrimination has also led to the Native Americans not being spoken about in the fields of diversity. Some fewer authors are writing about their unique culture probably due to their unstable access to proper education.
As an HR of a company, several strategies can be used to win a Native American job candidate. Offering them jobs will help in advancing diversity. Diversity in an organization is just as important as any other benefit of having good employees in a firm.
The first strategy is becoming a compassionate and aggressive recruiter; the Natives have a challenge of being aggressive towards an interview then fail to show up. The recruiter should not assume that the Native Americans have knowledge of some matters but gently guide them into the application process. It involves finding out the candidates' expectations without appearing insensitive and with cultural prejudices.
As an HR, I would advise against the use of standardized tests for the Native American job candidates. They have feelings of being uneasy, attached to the test process as part of the requirements to be selected (Jernigan. etal, 2018). The reason for the sensitivity is because their counterparts have complained of tests being the reason why they ever lost opportunities. Instead of subjecting them to tests, there can be other methods to identify skills necessary for the job; hence, it would be more beneficial to them.
As an HR, I would emphasize the importance of the job to them as individuals. The emphasis would dwell on the fact that the skills they acquire would be lifelong and nobody can ever take it away from them, unlike when they had materials that could be stolen from them. The recruiter needs to emphasize the support the natives would receive while working in the company, a support that would extend to the entire society and their families.
The most important way of ensuring that the organization gives the natives a chance to be employed is by making moves such as offering scholarships or offset school fees balances among the students from the tribal clans (Jernigan.etal, 2018). Although this method might not work at first, it will put the organization at the limelight as the best employer choice among the natives.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the natives have always faced several cases of isolation by the immigrants to the US. The native Americans have failed to be recognized people defending their original culture by the government, which is always in a race to drive them out of the fertile lands. An organization can win employees from the native clans by proving that it is actually of great benefit to them as individuals.
