Introduction
Money ball is a film based on the non-fiction book by Michael Lewis, which narrates about the Oakland's 'A's in their 2002 season game. It is a statistical movie, which attracts all the sports fans, especially the lovers of baseball. Despite it being an analytical film with a lot of mathematical concepts, the use of logical ideas explained in plain conversations and instantly changed the perception of both the young and old viewers, lovers of mathematical concepts, and those who dislike numerical and statistical data.
What I liked
Innovation is part of human culture, and in my entire life as a child at home and as a student in the university, I have always been keen on learning about people who revolutionized the culture of men and old perceptions. Revolution includes the invention of devices, to the creation of tactics in solving problems in the world industries
The movie is entertaining because of its showcasing of revolution and creativity in the creation of a lasting solution in the world of sports. There is a display of innovation in the film. The main character Beane (Brad Pitt), and the assistant manager are faced with a difficult situation ahead of the competitions. They have a limited budget for the players and building a winning team amid everything. Beane is hurt after losing a game the previous year after the departure of star players in the team. The spirit of rebuilding instills hope in Beane, who scouts for young talents. I like the idea that Beane is open-minded throughout the film and works well with his manager, who is a young economist from Yale University (W. W. Norton & Company, 2011). It is interesting how he ignores the criteria of hiring players applied by the scouting coaches and uses the sabermetrics method to hire undervalued players such as the aged David Justice and other injured players. Despite the outrage from Oakland's management, Beane is relentless in his strategy, which is logical and was thrilling to see him experiment it in an actual game.
What I Disliked
The movie is interesting but short. Although the film is entertaining, there is a level of technical terms related to the application of the sabermetrics technique used in the movie. It may require some time for analysis of the term, the theory, and its application. I am tempted to question the application of the theory in real life. The level of accuracy is not perfect despite being based on a non-fiction story because of a high display of the relative value of slugging, which measures the total bases per bat, leading to the dismissing of traditional baseball tricks such as stealing bases and bunts, which are likely to happen in an actual field. It gives the film an impression of a scripted myth, trying to push the sabermetric theory. It is centered on baseball, which was established during the early periods of the eighties. It is not comprehensive on whether the same theory and statistical data can be applied in attempts of a non-resourced organization to change its operation.
What I Learned
I learned in the film that there is always a second chance to win after a failure if a person never gives up in a quest for success. Beane is defeated in a competition in the year 2001, and despite losing his fame and job, he is determined to rebuild the Oakland baseball team. I also learned the importance of building a relevant team and remaining focused on the aims. Beane picks a manager who advises him on the best way of scouting for the players. The other lesson learned is the possibility of applying theoretical values to change the operations of a company in the modern century. It is an indicator of the importance of analytical data and numerical in the real world. It is an important film, as it gave me a highlight on baseball, its basic principles, and rules.
