Introduction

The first episode of Flashpoint Season 1 shows the tactical responses of the Strategic Response Unit (SRU) which is a police unit based in Toronto, Canada that majorly concentrates on handling emergencies cases within the area. The episode begins where the SRU responds to an emergency where a woman is held hostage outside the office building by a gunman who had just murdered his estranged wife. The SRU is called when the situation intensifies making it difficult for ordinary police officers to address the situation. This is because the emergency involves a hostage situation where there are armed criminals who are often giving bomb threats. The situation becomes more complicated when the gunman's son gets into the scene since the officers have to be tactical such that they take down the gunman without hurting the son.

While this episode may seem to focus on the tactical actions, glamor, and the gunplay of the SRU, this is not the case. The episode focuses on exploring the personalities and conflict resolution skills that are utilized in running the SRU team especially now that it majorly deals with tense and emergencies. The episode is full of emotional appeal and character development. It is evident that Sergeant Greg Parker, who is the team leader of the SRU works in unison with Ed Lane, the veteran officer with the aim of leading the team effectively to ensure that they create and enhance safety within the area. It is necessitated by ensuring that when emergency knocks, they respond effectively to ensure that all people get home alive including the officers, the victims, and the criminal as well.

The episode revolves around a man who breaks a restraining order to go and seek his separated wife. He drags her against her will, and when the wife tried to walk away, the husband shoots her at the back killing her on the spot. The distressed son follows the father (the gunman) as he heads towards a local plaza where he holds a blonde woman hostage as the members are getting out of a retirement party at the plaza. He holds a gun at the woman's head as a mechanism to avoid being arrested by the police officers. Team One of the SGU is called to address the situation but it becomes more complicated when they realized that the gunman is a Croatian immigrant and therefore cannot speak English. The SRU team leader and the lead negotiator try to reason with the man by providing a Croatian translator, but he does not comply. The man now points the gun to the sergeant, and the sniper is forced to shoot in him killing him immediately.

Conclusion

The episode, therefore, shows various instances of betrayal among other features. For example, at the beginning of the episode, the feature of abuse mistake is evident where a cop is continuously beating his wife until her sister takes the matter into her hands by holding the husband at gunpoint. While conducting investigations, the SRU officer finds out that the cop's partners and friends were aware that he was beating his wife but ignored the issue. It is also evident that Greg Parker was a victim of abusive parents during his childhood. Greg developed his negotiation skills from the early childhood encounter where after facing abuse from his father, Greg later spent much time of his childhood striving to protect his younger brother from facing a similar problem.
