The mood organ is an excellent way for Dick to accomplish the role of the dehumanization of the human characters. The excerpt states how Rick hesitated between dialing for a thalamic suppressant meant to abolish the mood of rage or the other one of thalamic stimulant that was to make him irked to the point of winning the argument. Deckard turns to the mood organ so that he would request a better mood (Dick 2). The wife tells him that she ought to plunge into the real despair twice in every month for the sake of variety. It is a routine for Rick to set the mood organ when he gets up so that it gives him a cheerful mood, and he tells the wife to do the same.

However, the wife does not agree with the idea of mood organ and objects its existence. Iran suggests that emotions are to be earned. She tells the husband that her schedule will need the inclusion of a self-accusatory depression session for six hours. Rick wonders why anyone would like to include such in their program and Iran says that it is healthy for an individual to feel emotions that are in line with the situations they find themselves in at times (Dick 3). In her case, she would like to explore the poisoned and depopulated world.

The downside of the mood organ is that it increases human reliance on machines and devices. It is a disturbing symbol of humans and their dependence on tools that make them feel some way; hence become more like those machines. Rick does not want to earn the emotions and prefers dialing the mood organ to get the cheerful mood that he wants. Rick wants Iran to dial the mood organ so that she would find something bright to do.

Iran says that she cannot stand watching TV before having breakfast. Rick suggests that she should dial 888, which is the desire to watch TV even when nothing is exciting on it. When Iran says that she does not feel like dialing anything, Rick suggests that she should dial three that will stimulate her cerebral cortex to want to dial (Dick 4). Later on, Rick decides to dial a positive mood for all of them. He dialed for a fresh and creative attitude towards his job.

The mood organ is beneficial for Rick, while Iran sees it as a disadvantage to humans who need to earn emotions. Rick seems to try his best to convince Iran about the mood organ, but Iran wants to feel every emotion that crosses. It is the argument between Rick and Iran that sets the scene for the rest of the book as readers learn a few things concerning their marriage.
