In an attempt to solve crime and eradicate a rogue international criminal consortium, the syndicate, William Brandt (Jeremy Renner) coordinates a group of IMF agents among them Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) in retrieving a package on a cargo plane. Ethan literary jumps on an almost vanishing opportunity, and by the aid of the hacking expertise of Benji, he can get access to the plane and retrieve a package conveniently packaged for a parachute landing. The container is filled with canisters of toxic nerve gas, and this in a way hints to Ethan that there must be a connection for the cargo and the syndicate, an idea that, to the CIA, represented by its director Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin) is a sick imagination. While reporting to the IMF office disguised as a London record shop to receive more orders, Ethan is captured by the syndicate headed by Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) and is taken in for questioning( of course accompanied with torture). Soon after the mission, the IMF is disbanded and incorporated into the CIA while Ethan is branded a rogue agent.

While in the hands of the syndicate, an MI6 disavowed undercover agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Fergusson) helps him escape and for the next six months, he continues his mission of tracking the syndicate single-handedly. Benji joins the CIA and is regularly subjects to polygraphs, which he bits handily, while the director attempts to find the location of Ethan. Knowing that he can't do it by himself, Ethan contacts Benji and invites him to an opera Turandot in Vienna where the former believes the syndicate was up to killing the Australian chancellor (Rupert Wickham). He dies in his bombed car few minutes after an engagement between the former IMF agents and the syndicate snipers.

Benji, Ethan, and Ilsa then head to Morocco to retrieve a ledger suspected to contain the names and locations of the syndicate. After a detailed preparation and hectic retrieval, Ilsa double-crosses the two and takes the ledge. Luckily, Benji admits to having made a copy. It later realized that the ledger is encrypted and can only be decrypted with the prime minister's fingerprints. The syndicate abduct Benji and dares Ethan to have the ledger decrypted or have Benji killed. "Your mission, should you choose to accept it!" Ethan impersonates the MI6 director Attlee (Simon McBurney) and summons the Prime Minister (Tom Hollander) in a charity auction, as a matter of national security. The real Attlee arrives, and Ethan compels him to admit to funding the syndicate. They obtain the fingerprint, and on delivering the decrypted ledger, lures lane to a bulletproof glass container where he is apprehended. The CIA director defends his decision of disbanding the IMF claiming it a plot to make Ethan an undercover agent, and he becomes the secretary for the IMF.

The soundtrack of the movie mission: impossible is one adopted by other films in presenting a mood of crucial decision making, and serious action in the play. It is one that captures the attention of the viewer keeping them in a spirit of expectancy and anxiety. The lighting in the room where Ethan was arrested is deemed, a symbol of imminent danger and evildoing. Tom cruise presents himself as an incredible film actor, as he entirely wears the amour presented to him in his role as an IMF agent. Some scenes, like the one he is hanging on the side of the plane, is as real as it could get, as the buckles are only supporting him at the side of the plane doors. The effective utilization of sounds, as in the case where Ethan was exercising in a separate room, while the CIA was approaching in his former room presented an atmosphere of tension, and immediately released the viewer of the pressure once it was revealed it was only sound. For all its worth, mission impossible is a film for the "great" column.
