Introduction
A mindset refers to whether you believe qualities such as intelligence and talent are fixed or changeable traits (Cherry, 2020). The Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck (2006) differentiated individuals’ mindsets into either fixed or growth mindset. People with a fixed mindset believe that their ability is innate and unchangeable. In contrast, people with a growth mindset believe in continuously improving their abilities. Reggie needs to embrace a growth mindset to be to learn new ideas being introduced at his workplace.
Understanding of the Brain
In the past decade, our understanding of the brain has revolutionized. It has been discovered that the brain is constantly changing due to a property known as brain plasticity. The concept of brain plasticity supports the growth mindset. The brain is capable to continuously form new cells and neuron connections that will help an individual to develop new abilities and improve their mental capacity. It is possible to improve memory with brain plasticity and the growth mindset. There are a number of strategies that can be utilized to study effectively, increase recall, and improve retention of information in the long-term memory. Some of the strategies include a focus on attention, structure and organization, and visualizing concepts (Cherry, 2019). Reggie can focus his attention when reading the safety policies to increase his recall of the information. He should structure and organize the materials to avoid clutter. It is important to keep in mind that Reggie has a fixed mindset since he believes that, “you can’t teach an old man new tricks.”. Gloria will have to encourage him to change his perspective to that of a growth mindset which will help him embrace new changes in the work environment and help him keep his job. Brain plasticity is neutral to age and gender. Despite the fact that Reggie is old, his age does not limit his ability to improve the abilities that will help him succeed. With the strategies on how to effectively study, Reggie is capable of enhancing his long-term memory, recall, and retention of the materials on safety policies and he will be prepared for the compliance test when due.
