A breakup conversation is affected by people's views regarding what is significant about how medium functions. People's media ideologies play a central role in their experiences of media switching, especially during a breakup. It is similar to language ideologies, which involve assumptions such that different individuals hold on how communicative tasks are accomplished by mediums.

Individuals reflect on the emerging and moral imaginations about what comprises proper and improper technology use. A majority of these narratives surround the degree to which particular combinations of technologies allow the breakup process to be an effective performative speech action. They are affected by people's views on what is significant about how medium functions. Different social groups can have overlapping but not identical media ideologies.

Text messaging was regarded as more private since individuals had their cell phones with them always. Additionally, due to the 160 characters limit, others deemed text messaging as distancing. According to them, a lot of information was limited or summarized before being conveyed. Text messages were seen as informal, for instance, starting off a conversation by text and then switching to email made the communication more formal. Due to this informality, it would be unacceptable to send a breakup message using a version as the medium.

Media switching can be explained as the shift of conversing from one medium such as text messages- mostly seen as informal means to emails- which are regarded as a formal medium of passing information, especially regarding the breakup. Code-switching is a useful resource for analyzing media switching. Code-switching is nowhere close to media switching mainly because it occurs within the same conversational turn, or people are in apposition to alternate languages between conversational turns. People are cognizant when a conversation in one medium becomes a conversation in another medium, but code-switching, it is not apparent to the speakers when a code "ends." Lastly, media switching involves various technologies where the materiality of a medium ensures that media switching is a different act than code-switching.

Language Death and Revitalization

Language death refers to the gradual disappearance of a particular language or people that share the said language. Words are not evenly spread across the globe, and this gives rise to many hotspots of language diversity. There are various groupings of language; safe languages, Endangered languages, Moribund languages, and Dead or Extinct languages. When a language dies, the local human ecological knowledge base is eroded, the cultural heritage of the constituents is lost, and finally, there is a failure in having a proper understanding of human cognitive capacities.

Death of languages is caused by the demise of all the speakers of that language or a situation where the speakers fail to transmit their language to their children. Natural and human calamities are attributed to the complicated death of a language. Taking these factors into consideration, one would come to the conclusion that safeguarding moribund languages from various parts of the world is crucial in maintaining the cultural heritage of the region. Social crimes that lead to the extinction of a language should be discouraged in a bid to secure the history of any community. Additionally, parents ought to embrace teaching children the local language. Passing down a language from one generation to another ensures continuity and reduces the risk associated with the extinction of the language.
