Glory 1989 is a war film of American drama based on the story and history of the infantry volunteer 0f 54th Massachusetts as articulated by Robert Shaw, a commanding officer at the time of American civil war. The infantry comprised entirely of men that were African-American excluding officers (Duncan, 82). The film underscores racism, and the discriminating and biased White's attitude toward the blacks is revealed vividly. Colonel Shaw in this case, unlike the officers from the European side wanted to give training to the regiment of African- American relentlessly fighting in the civil war. This film Glory discloses their battle against desire and injustice proving themselves commendable of their nation. Many individuals had many doubts whether there was a necessity of such men with black identity having a fighting ability. Douglas Fredrick was one individual in the film who had a feeling that it was necessary for the black regiment as their chances of winning were by many individuals. This was something that the film got right.
The film discloses many civil war aspects. It exposes the realities that are cruel which the soldiers who battled in the war went through. It shows the primitive and wild means of man battle practiced in the period of civil war. The movie is the same as a historical testimonial that is exceptionally exact in the description. The soldiers with black identity had to deal with their fellow European soldiers prejudice and battle the war. Unlike other films of war in the past, Glory not only focuses on training and warfare structure but also it is about the soldier's comradeship including the courage and valor with which individual's battle to attain their objectives (Shaw, 333). The 54th regiment men even though they were unskilled desired to offer their greatest showing the North that they were able to do and through this took their precious lives as they proved to be actual heroes.
In the film, it gets wrong from the beginning, as Shaw who is the commanding officer knows not all these black men will be given an opportunity to see the battle. As from the beginning, he is seen to be extremely strict and steady in his step towards regiment training and points out on the endurance, momentum, and alertness importance. This behavior in the movie seems to be slave/master relationship, and the movie Glory displays that there was a small difference in approach of the South and the North in the time of civil war towards the African-American as they had on slavery (Shaw, 334). The abolitionists from the north needed to liberate the individuals who were reserved enslaved but extremely evident in the film that considered unequal in many ways.
Conclusion
In the film, the economy of the south was founded on slavery and cotton. The leaders in politics were against the slavery abolition as it could convey the socio-economic structure collapse. This economic issues brought about by the civil war as the blacks in the regiment were made to battle for their foundation (Duncan, 85). Although the European officer in command Colonel Shaw biasedness at the start not treating blacks like humans when time passed his opinions changed and he recognized that they not different. He desired to assist them as he began backing up their source. He then encouraged them to fight a war that brought them glory and admiration. The film is not of the African-Americans taking their squad but brought in a transformation in the public minds in the direction of the black.
