Introduction
I shadowed Mr. Andre Gilbert, the assistant coach for the Markham Majors, AAA Team boys under 13. Mr. Gilbert starts his day by reviewing the week's schedule which helps him design the practice plans to ensure the team is ready for its next big event. The coaching job provided an opportunity for me to learn and interact with young and energetic boys that were eager to sharpen their skills in the field. One of the most interesting value I learned is the aspect of teamwork. All members of the team were willing to work together for their collective goal. Interacting with the boys revealed that they ensured every member of the team attended practice lessons during the week as regular training improved and strengthened their skills together. One thing I liked about the job was the trust and the positivity of the young members of the team as they looked forward to every training session. The boys' eagerness was evident in the way they reported to the training sessions early every day. One of the challenges I found was my unpreparedness to exercise for longer and keep up with the energy of the young boys.
Mr. Gilbert stated that for one to pursue a career in sports, he or she had to pass the national certification program and possess a degree in any sports management course. However, the most important thing to have for one who wants to have a career in sports is passion and personal commitment to perfect their skills. The job shadowing experience influenced my career choice positively. It also motivated and encouraged me to love my sports management course, since it would help me both in the short-term and in the long-term as I chase my dream of being in the sports industry.
I would like to meet and interact with Mr. Gilbert in the future as a person to inspire and motivate me in the sports industry. He encouraged me to follow my instincts and even mentioned that if I was interested, I could start being an assistant coach after school and work my way up. Some of the areas that were discussed during the job shadow that would be included in the program is the influence of the coach on the personal attributes of the team. For instance, a coach might have bad personal characteristics like being dishonest or be a liar. The team members are quick to learn through actions and might involuntarily copy the behavior of their coach. This means that either the negative and positive aspects can be passed from the coach to the team. I think it is important to consider the personality of a coach before hiring him or her train young boys since he or she is a big influence on the characters that the team develops both in the short-term and in the long-term.
Appreciation Letter to the Coach
Dear Mr. Andre Gilbert,
I trust this finds you well.
I want to appreciate you for the time and wise words you shared with me as I conducted the interview to understand the sports industry better. I would like to mention that your insights were beneficial to me and I was inspired and motivated to continue pursuing my sports management course.
I would also commend you for the good work, commitment, and dedication you have as you train and handle the Markham Majors AAA Team boys under 13. The boys seem genuinely interested in sharpening their skills under your leadership. The boys also appeared disciplined and were willing to follow instructions, which reflected your prowess in molding them to listen to their coach.
I hope to meet and interact with you again in the future.
Regards, Gioia
