Introduction
There are quite a number of definitions which can be given to the word 'integrity'. All the various kinds of definitions are the correct sense of the word or rather value itself depends on the setting in which it is being applied. Generally, integrity refers to that completeness or the wholeness of an individual to stand with the truth under all circumstances. It is actually known as that value which determines how the character of a person is within all various kinds of environments this particular individual may find themselves in.
With integrity as the value, the person is able to bear some degree of an uncompromising stand when it comes to dealing with issues that have to do with the upholding of the societal ethical and moral values. In addition, the value of integrity controls the actions of an individual under all the available circumstances in that they purpose to lead-free lives being true to themselves and true to the other people who are around them (Hope, 2016). An individual bearing this value will always want to speak out their truth or rather what they know truly about a certain issue without having to care about how ugly or painful this may be to the other person out there as long as this individual knows that what they are saying and doing is morally and ethically right.
Integrity is a value that is most useful in life like the one people lives today in this world. It has come a time when the morals of the people have been eroded by quite a large number of negative factors. People have no integrity even of the smallest percentage and actually, this is what has made the world a place where most people get suppressed by others. The lack of integrity is the greatest contribution of the immoral and unethical world that people live today. Integrity, however, is a value which can be applied in all environments and then change everything in the order of things within those environments (Howes & Arnold, 2013). Some of the environments in which integrity would work best are like in organizations where public services are being offered and all classes of people are represented, in personal businesses among so many other such environments.
Importance of Integrity in Everyday Life
In the world today, there are so many advantages that are associated with having integrity. The nature of the world seems to like to command the people who live in this world to bear and show a great level of integrity as they lead their everyday life (Howes & Arnold, 2013). This is and has become a necessity if one has to make it and achieve great things in this world without having to go against the ethics and morals of the society one is living and without having to go against the will and suppress the freedom of other people. The advantages accrued to having and practicing integrity are just countless.
There Is No Harm for Others
When high levels of integrity are practiced in the places where people live, work or interact with each other, the main advantage of this is that these particular individuals get to feel for each other. Everyone knows and understands well what is required of them as per the ethics and morals of their society (Cleary, Walter, Horsfall & Jackson, 2013). With this consideration in mind, then it means that each and every person will do what they know is right and morally correct as per the regulations of the ethics of their society. When this happens, then no one gets hurt or harmed by each other. This is because integrity tends to control and or limit the actions of the people towards others. Everybody becomes a friend to their friends and they will not at any given time want to do what is not expected of them.
When it comes to speaking/ talking, people with integrity talk in a different manner from the rest of the people they lead everyday life with and concerning diverse issues of concern in life. The way in which speaking one's truth works to ensure that there is no harm caused for the other person is that people having this value of integrity will always be guided by it to tell what is right as per the morals and ethics that govern their societies. In this way, no one will talk about what is not true about themselves and others out there (Cleary, Walter, Horsfall & Jackson, 2013). Even if at some point it may seem to hurt some people, at the end of it all, the hurt people tend to realize that the value dictates on speaking and doing what is right whether it tastes bitter to the other people. In the meantime, with the trend of practicing and being ruled by integrity, each and every person gets to understand and remains a friend of the other. Everyone is protected in the confines of integrity in that they will not get hurt by what their fellow individuals have the value of integrity say or do.
Respect for Each Other Prevails
Respect is a key thing in today's life and especially in cases where a multitude or group of people is being dealt with. It is actually a long way in which respect comes in people as a result of bearing the value of integrity. With integrity in place, each and every single individual will do and say what is right for the other individuals in the strive to be true to oneself and to the rest. When a person feels that what they deserve has been said or done to them, then it is with no doubt that these people will also follow the trend of doing to others what they see right for them (Howes & Arnold, 2013). Moreover, where one is given the treatment which is lawfully and ethically fine by others, they feel respected and that they belong. It is this feeling of belonging and that one is being respected that fosters the growth and spread of more respect within and outside a certain group. Integrity in a large way fosters the respect growth from a single person all the way to all the others around them and the level of respect strongly spreads in the people.
It Unites People
Integrity as a good value plays a very important role in bringing people together. It is true that integrity carries nearly all the other good values within itself. In the first place, integrity calls for love of the individuals in different ways. When all the people do the right thing and talk what is right, it is automatic that there will be a great deal of love for one another since everyone cares for their friends, relatives and even who they don't know. Integrity is the control of them all. Where love for one another in this case prevails, the people are brought together as everyone feels that they care and are connected to one another (Kannan-Narasimhan & Lawrence, 2012). The way in which the integrity and love work to bring a big or limited number of persons together creates unity among the people in that they begin to speak and do things in one accord as per the moral and ethical guidelines that control or govern them. United people, in addition, are happy and peaceful people (Bland, 2014). Therefore, in the world of the present day, integrity helps so much to create a society where unity exists and peace prevails right from every single individual extending all the way to the entire society and world in which people live in.
Taking Responsibility for Mistakes
When people in the society of living have and or bear the value of integrity in themselves and they practice it, what happens at the end of everything is that every person will not want to blame anything on the others. Instead, in order to observe the ethics and moral values of their society, these individuals then make sure that they become responsible for their own mistakes. Being responsible for one owns mistakes is because they want to just do the best and the right things to others and avoid harm to them (Hope, 2016). If this then spreads within the entire society, the members of the society are even able to correct the mistakes of others in a way that the other people feel comfortable to accept these corrections and then at long last a change is seen in them.
Important for Leaders With the Power of Choice
In the life of today, as leaders represent the other people, integrity is one of the best values that each leader who has got the power of choice for the people should strive to achieve. A leader with this power of choice for people and with integrity makes sure that they keep into consideration the demands of the people. The leaders are controlled by the integrity they have so that they are able to respect and honor these demands by the people and fulfilling them for the common good of the people who selected them (Cleary, Walter, Horsfall & Jackson, 2013). By so, integrity makes leadership a bit easy and increases the level of understanding between the people and their leaders. Basically, integrity transforms leadership in a positive way.
Fosters Cooperation and Friendships for Achievement Together
When it comes to groups working together in organizations, institutions, and even other smaller groups, cooperation between the members makes it easy for the groups to achieve the goals they have set in an effective manner. The cooperation does not just come automatically but is instead born by the integrity which exists in the various members of the groups. Integrity brings cooperation in that it bears in itself love, respect for each other, commitment and taking of ones responsibility among several other related values (Kannan-Narasimhan & Lawrence, 2012). The work out of all these values impact on the members of a group or a team to ensure that they get committed towards a common achievement of the necessary goals. This happens since they all feel like family with integrity driving them and therefore can work together without any kind of discrimination and misunderstanding.
The Importance of Integrity in the Workplace
Integrity as a value is so much important in the working places both for the employers and the employees or any other person working in a particular organization. There are several ways in which these people having integrity impacts on the work and the mode of conduct in the workplace. These are the various advantages that are associated with the institution of integrity in places of work;
Reduces Corruption and Related Vices
There are so many different vices that tend to take place between the leaders, the employees and other staff in the workplace. One of the most dangerous vices is that of corruption since it allows some able people to access certain services and favor at the expense of the others. Corruption takes place because the level of integrity of the people is low (Kannan-Narasimhan & Lawrence, 2012). When in the workplace everyone strives to achieve a high level of integrity to do the right thing and say what is the truth exposing all that happens in the background against the ethics and morals of that particular firm, then this will be a great highway to ending the bad vices of corruption for a lifetime. An organization or workplace where there is no corruption means that people will be at peace and thus the achievement of the aims of the set standards for the organization together will not be any big deal.
Fosters Team Work
In the workplace, attainment of the organizational goals is so much easy with the teams put in place. However, having teams without the ability to work together would and sounds irrelevant. What brings about the ability to work together is each member of the team being able and motivated that they are a crucial part of the team and understanding that they have to comply to the ethics and morals respecting one another(Cleary, Walter, Horsfall & Jackson, 2013). All the above then comes as a result of the members of the work teams portraying high levels of integrity in their work.
