Abstract

A possible world where billions of objects could sense, communicate and share information through interconnection in a public and private internet protocol is coming to a reality. Human beings have strived and dedicated their efforts towards the development of technology over the years (Ashton, 2009). Such interconnected objects have data that is regularly collected, analysed and utilised to initiate the actions, thereby providing rich intelligence for planning, management as well as the decision-making. This is what is known as the Internet of Things (IoT). Most sectors across society have attempted to adopt the IoT concept, with much impacts anticipated to occur on human bodies, military organisations and operations and our daily lives. The current study is therefore as an assessment of the impacts of the IoT on human beings, our everyday lives and military. The primary objective of the study was to assess the impacts of the Internet of Things (IoT) on the military, human beings and domestic lives. The study used a structured questionnaire, key informants, and interviews to collect both the qualitative and primary data that facilitated the acquisition of information necessary for the study. The secondary data included the review of the published reports, journals, and internet books to identify the existing information of various effects of the IoT. Conceivably, the secondary sources facilitated the comparison between the already researched information and the existing knowledge gap, as well as our current study.

INTRODUCTION

Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the increase in the physical object's network featuring an IP address for the connectivity of the internet as well as the communication that occurs between the objects and other Internet-based devices and systems. Fundamentally, the IoT enhances and facilitates the access of the remote sensor data and the monitoring of the physical world from a distance. In this way, the IoT permits objects to act in unison, through ambient intelligence mode. Primarily, such devices and connection have been reported to have tremendous effects on the society, with specific impacts on human bodies, everyday lives, e-commerce, and military programs and many more. It is important to note that IoT is a pervasive technology that hinges on the universal connectivity of people and objects. IoT has further been described as a giant network of things that include various things such as the industrial equipment and machinery, everyday products such as dishwashers, and thermostats. The local networks of sensors used in the monitoring of the farms and cities are further examples of the IoT applications.

The ability to link the physical world to the internet and other data networks has had enormous implications for society and the whole economy (Ashton, 2009). The IoT has made it possible to monitor and manage the operations and activities for many people across the world. As part of this implications, people have been able to track the goods as they cross the ocean. Similarly, IoT in medicine has made the detection of the changes in the patient's blood pressure possible especially for those who suffer severe disorders such as diabetes and heart problems. More than the expected evolution of the Information technology in the world, the IoT enhances the redefinition of the manner in which human being engage with the physical world, thereby making it possible for the computer-mediated mechanisms ways of conducting various activities including business, everyday activities and even the businesses.

While it is evident that the IoT is still in their early stages of growth, it is worth to note that everyday machines, shipping containers, various elements of infrastructure and even people are being equipped with the sensors that are networked (Iera et al. 2010). Such integration helps to report their statuses, receive the instructions and finally respond to actions depending on the information they receive. Various studies estimate that more than 9 billion devices are connected around the globe, and these include computers and smartphones. This number is however expected to rise over the next decade with the estimates ranging from 25 to 50 billion devices by 2025. A study by McKinsey Global Institute aimed at developing the current perspective on the future impacts of the IoT across the entire globe. They wanted to understand the sectors and aspects that could be affected by the use of IoT technologies and if it could create value. The institute further wished to understand how the IoT can create value up and down value chains. As part of their conclusions, it was evident that the applications of the IoT in various settings could create value in different in places such as homes, offices, factories, worksites, hospitals, military organizations and cities.

Statement of Problem

The impacts of the IoT has been a significant source of debate for a long time. While it is evident that the IoT is still a developing concept, there have been some proven impacts on the society and the economy. IoT has had profound impacts on human beings, society, and everyday lives. As a giant network of things, the IoT include various things such as the industrial equipment and machinery, everyday products such as dishwashers, and thermostats. The local networks of sensors used in the monitoring of the farms and cities are further examples of the IoT applications.

While these impacts are evident, little information is available regarding the current effects of the IoT applications in Military and defence. This is based on the fact that the military organizations, in the recent past has experienced a revolutionised way of conducting their warfare operations. However, few studies address the influence of IoT on the military. In this way, therefore, this study seeks to assess the application of the IoT in the military and the possible impacts that such application will have on the future military and defence operations on a global perspective. The study also seeks to assess the impacts of IoT applications on human beings, and in everyday lives.

The Aim of the Study

The primary aim of this study is to assess the impacts of the Internet of Things (IoT) on the military, human beings and domestic lives.

The Specific Objectives of the Study is:

  • To establish how IoT has revolutionised the military operations and the possible future effects the IoT is likely to have on defence.
  • To establish the current and future impacts of IoT on human life and domestic use

Justification of the Study

This research aims to provide information about the effects of the Internet of Things (IoT) on human beings concerning the impacts on human bodies, domestic and military operations. Most importantly, the information that this research presents will enable the government as well as the agencies concerned with technological advancement to employ appropriate measure to help the military organizations and all other sectors affected to take advantage of the offset technologies currently developed. In this way, such sectors will achieve better performance of robotics entities and systems, thus accomplishing their mission goals, with reduced risks,

Limitation of the Study

There exists inadequate literature about the effects of IoT on military organizations and operations for quality research. Besides, the amount of data collected might not be enough. Notably, the researcher anticipates the limitation for IoT application on Defence sector, which will likely to reduce interactive participation to a bare minimum.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Impacts of IoT on Military

The emergence of the IoT has seen tremendous growth in the military operations across many nations across the world. Modern military programs involve activities in a complex, multidimensional, profoundly transformative and disruptive environment. This is because of the unexpected partners as well as the irregular opponents. Notably, the military leaders and commanders conduct their roles under intense time pressures (Ashton, 2009). They need a shorter time frame to obtain the right information about their environment, assess the situation they are yet to deal with and organize for courses of actions and decisions. They are further required to draw from all available sources to make sure that they can establish a figure out a complete picture of the manner in which the situation is likely to be. The application of the IoT has helped transform these activities, actions and processes. The use of the IoT has been primarily focused on civilian use. As part of this application, IoT has proved to be a significant paradigm that considers the pervasive presence of various things within the environment. Through a wireless and wire connections, military offers and commanders have been able to communicate and cooperate towards the achievement of their military objectives. The IoT has made objects and things more recognizable, thus making the military officers behave intelligently through the making of the decisions that are related to the context of the assessed situations.

According to Ashton (2009), military equipment is further expected to be increasingly equipped with communication as well as the processing of data capabilities. This can be utilised to assess or manipulate equipment status. In some degree, the equipment could be integrated with sensors or the actuators in machines used by military organizations (Golling & Stelte, 2011). Both the physical and military internet of things demonstrate the identities, physical identities, as well as the virtual personalities as a result of being integrated into the system. The possible effect of such integration of the IoT in the military organizations is a broader set of sensors and information for use in awareness of the situation, medical information and logistics application as part of military activities (Golling & Stelte, 2011). The smart base use of the IoT within military organizations has helped to improve security within the military bases and headquarters. Notably, the use of the IoT in these circumstances often incorporate the commercial IoT technologies in buildings and facilities to enhance force protection. Maritime and littoral environments have also benefited from such applications.
