Introduction
The Earth Charter is a universal declaration that contains different attributes and guidelines that are very important since they are essential for promoting a fair society, and a society characterized by tranquility worldwide in the 21st century. Similarly, the earth charter was formulated through a worldwide dialogue hence it was supported by many people from different parts of the world. Moreover, the earth charter is crucial because it provides a very clear guideline on how to solve different issues that are relevant to the well-being of humans (Coult hard 453). The main proponent of life boat ethics is an ecologist known as Garrett Hardin. Therefore, this essay will explore the main ideas surrounding life boat ethics and the earth.
Democracy
Democracy in modern society ought to be observed and protected, and citizens of a given society should be allowed to choose their leaders freely without interference of those who hold power. They should be allowed to freely participate in elections to vote in leaders of their own choice, leaders who can easily come up with strategies that can be implemented hence ensuring that problems facing the people are solved.
Human rights example the freedom of speech and expression are very important to citizens in a democratic nation. Correspondingly, freedom to express your self is essential and necessary, where people come up with different ideas without intimidation or harassment from anybody including the government. Therefore, it is the right and responsibility of every human to create and shape their own lives (Appiah 433). Freedom of speech can easily be expressed through giving a speech or even writing a speech by even calling a press conference that can be attended by a journalist who will keenly listen to whatever you want to say.
Moreover, to fully realize democracy, fairness in the economic and sector should be promoted for this will make it possible for many people to secure employment and meet their daily basic needs. Different institutions that are charged with the responsibility of ensuring equity and equality in the economic sector also have a roll of ensuring the people can access loans easily without barriers or hindrances from the governments and also equal employment opportunities to everyone regardless their race, skin color, tribe or even religion.
Economic and Social Fairness
Poverty is evident in many parts of the world, many people continue to languish in abject poverty they are unable to meet their daily need, lack access to clean water, food, and shelter. Therefore, empowering every person with education will serve as an important strategy to reduce poverty levels. Human beings who are well educated and have gone through school learn cycle have the upper hand in employment because they have the needed skilled and qualified personnel needed the economic sector.
Promotion of gender equity and equality is very crucial to women and girls since for a very long time they have been victims of gender-based violence, physical and verbal abuses.
Governments of different parts of the world should put in place different measures that will ensure women and girls are protected from any form of violence perpetuated against them.
Additionally, in the political arena women should be given a chance just like men for them to participate actively in politics through legislation and also representing other women in important forums that are meant to air problems faced by women in their social political and economic life. Furthermore, given an opportunity to participate in the political arena women are given an equal chance to compete with men in politics without discrimination.
Monitoring and evaluation in the economic sector at different levels should aim at enhancing human development. Correspondingly, this can be achieved through the distribution of resources equally in the nations and other nations so that even the poor can similarly benefit. Normally, human development is enhanced by equal distribution of resources that can ensure their poor state is changed. Therefore, institutions such as banks that offer credit facilities should do so in an equal manner without discrimination.
Furthermore, to promote fairness, human rights should be improved by ending different forms of violation that have dominated for a very long time globally. Similarly, ending different forms on color, race, sex, religion, language, and nationality will equally serve as an important strategy of ensuring that fairness is promoted in the natural and social environment of human beings. Respecting rights such as ownership of property and the different means of obtaining livelihoods, honoring the youth in different societies will give them a chance to achieve their dreams.
Life boat Ethics
Moreover, less developed countries have been experiencing a great population increase over the years. Developed countries have advanced methods of ensuring food security for their people while developing nations do not have strategies. The growing population in developing countries is always unchecked; governments of developing countries continue to depend on developed countries for foreign aid. About lifeboat ethics Hardin opposes the idea of supporting the poor (Einarsdottir 345).
According to Hardin, the developed countries have strong institutions that have competent people and well managed. However, the developing nations are poor, have high populations, people present are not self-independent, they rely on the wealth lifeboat. Furthermore, the lifeboat of developed countries has resources that are only meant for their people. Lifeboat is a clear definition of the gap between the rich and the poor.
However, according to Garrett Hardin, helping the developing countries by sharing resources will result in more problems for developed countries. Garrett Hardin argues that in the event of helping the developing countries by giving them the resources, the resources will decrease hence the developed countries and developing countries will drown. Garrett Hardin strongly opposes the idea of helping the poor because that will be an indicator of exhausting global resources.
Conclusion
In conclusion, different nations globally cannot survive on their own since they need each other. Similarly, crucial economic activities take place in those nations, so they need peaceful relationships. Garrett Hardin ideas are not put in good faith because he says that every country should operate independently with their resources. Therefore, the earth charter is relevant in the modern world because it is playing an important role in ensuring fairness, tranquility and equality are promoted globally.
