Introduction

Jesus Christ is the son of God, who was born of earthly parents with the help of the Holy Spirit. It is, however, believed that Jesus was there long before man was created. He, however, had to come in the same form as human beings for them to accept him as their own. The purpose and mission of Christ are centered on saving man from sin and came as a promise from God. Right from the book of Genesis, there are promises of a seed that would be sent to save man from sin. This is mainly evident in the Eden story. Additionally, more promises are made through Abraham, who is nicknamed the father of all nations. As the descendant story goes on, there is the talk of a Messiah that is primarily propagated by prophets. Prophet Elijah described him as the Prince of peace. At the end of it all, Jesus is born, and his purpose is fulfilled.

Jesus' mission was to save and redeem that which was lost in the Garden of Eden. This said salvation was spread across the aspects of poverty, love, need, and the problem of humanity. Sin separated man from eternity, but the Messiah brought new hope. His torture, death, resurrection, and ascension were a sign of mission accomplished. It also meant that man was free from sins and signified a new beginning for humankind. The mission and purpose of Christ can mainly be highlighted according to the events in the gospel books. In this case, the book of Luke will be the central focus.

First, Jesus was sent to set people free from captivity. This, however, did not mean the detention of slavery or physical prisons but from the chains of sin. His teachings were centered on driving evil from people. This is evident in the case where he cast out demons and forced them to pigs. At the same time, he was meant to free people from the captivity of material wealth. Even in the modern world, people are more concerned about material wealth instead of worrying about their spiritual wellbeing. Material wealth does not add value as far as the heavenly kingdom is concerned, and that is why Jesus chased away the people he found doing business in the church. He also came to set the world free from unnecessary traditions that do not benefit their souls.

Apart from captivity, Jesus came to save the world free from physical suffering. This is mainly evident in the many miracles that Jesus performed. One of them is the woman who bled for 12 years, but Jesus set her free from her suffering. Additionally, there was the case of the blind beggar from Jericho, who was made to see again. Apart from saving these people from physical pain, he also did away with the aspect of oppression. The healed woman had been despised for long, but Jesus saved her from the challenges she faced. There were also socially oppressed individuals who were seen as outcasts in society, but Jesus came in and helped them. An excellent example of this is the story of 10 lepers that Jesus healed.

The cases highlighted in the book of Luke are just a typical representation of Jesus' mission and purpose. The first of its kind was to save man from sin. The events from the Garden of Eden lived to haunt human beings but were all washed away by the blood of Jesus. Jesus was also meant to save people from the slavery physical slavery that involved material wealth. The purpose and mission of Christ remain constant for both believers and non-believers. He was the Lamb of God, who was sent to wipe away the sins of humanity. He also came to set people free from physical suffering and oppression. All these came to pass through his death and resurrection. Although it seems like the world is slipping away, Christ's mission was completed, and all that remains is the second coming.
