Globalization has abridged the world into a small village by shaping the way people interact and carry out businesses. The free flow of information through the proliferation of internet use, easy accessibility of smartphones, laptops, and tablets are some of the global technology transformations across the world (Tidd & Bessant, 2018). Apart from effective communication, transportation has also been boosted and made products and services easily accessible. Globalization has been buttressed by technology and communication to enhance the flow of information and influence perception through culture.
Technology revolution era began in the 1950s with the invention of television. Later on, in 1953 and 1959, the first commercial computer and microchip were introduced to the market, while in 1972, a first video game was launched. Technology advancement steps continued in 1975, 1979 and 1983 with the introduction of a personal computer, a portable radio branded as walkman and a wireless cellphone. The world wide web was invented in 1989 while the internet for all personal computers in 1990. In 1995 nanotechnology was improved leading to the discovery of microcomputers, modern TVs in addition to smartphones in 2002 (Chandler, Hikino, & Von Nordenflycht, 2009). Technology has transformed communication since the introduction of social media sites in 2004, wireless reader in 2007 and iPad in 2010, communication has improved.
Technological discoveries and inventions adopted have enabled people across the world to easily obtain information (Adams, Freeman, Hall, Cummins, & Yuhnke, 2016). For instance, through the internet, people can interact with other users of various social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WeChat and Snapchat to not only keep in touch but learn their culture and network. Data technology is now just a matter of clicking a button and ultimately producing results instantly. Through globalization, human beings have raised and addressed various issues, influenced charity activities and also thwarted various acts of social injustice and natural disasters. Apart from the traditional media houses like TV and radio, currently, the internet has made it possible for users to access news through websites and social media sites.
Globalization through technology has changed culture through easy accessibility of music, art, and dance. Currently, people express their culture and share with the rest of the world through the internet. The diverse genre of music, art, and dance allows individuals to express themselves as well as learn. Tidd & Bessant (2018) state that technology innovation has boosted outreach and created a platform where people can earn a living.
There are various landmark factors that have influenced globalization. For example, music, art, and dance have changed people's perception of the world. However, technological innovations have positively transformed trade across the world by improving transport, communication, entertainment, health, education, and communication. Tidd & Bessant, (2018) posit that people from diverse backgrounds can easily share information and culture thus improving intercultural communication and boosting understanding.
