Introduction
Gattaca movie is one of the scientific films that trended and received many appreciations worldwide for having been creative in making a possible and probable occurrence in the form of fiction. The movie was written and directed by Andrew Niccol in the year 1997, purely full of fantasies and arbitrary actors having Vincent Freeman acting as the main actor, to whom most activities and scandals surround. The underlying meaning of the movie Gattaca is based on four essential letters G, A, T, and C. ideally, the letters represent Guanine, Adenine, Thymine and Cytosine, all of which are regarded as the four fundamental nucleobases that make up the DNA (Muller and Dalzotto). Therefore the whole movie revolves within the named genes and how they influenced life, Vincent, in achieving his life dreams. The primary aim of this paper is to effectively understand and relate the ideas of the movie to a psychological point of view, and eventually, learn how a newly discovered concept is was linked to human health.
The scientific movie portrayed a picture that none has expected before. Still, the knowledge was later taken positively, especially by the health professionals such as the genetic engineers as a form of alert and warning to such a potential real-world occurrence that might subject the lives of humankind in an extremely critical point (Muller and Dalzotto). The whole meaning of the movie can be linked to the introduction of psychology or its origin. In nursing, psychology is defined as a scientific study that is aimed at evaluating how the human minds function or operates and how the functioning may alter the individual's behaviour at certain times. Psychology also discusses the factors that influence behaviour, and henceforth, generalizes the factors as mental characteristics that define the ability of one to do something. It is this similar word that brings together the terms "thinking" and "behaviour" in a manner that, the activity of one, can be used to predict the action of the other.
Concerning the Gattaca movie, Vincent is born with impaired genetic engineering, as he realizes that his genes are not functioning correctly because he is one of those children who were born naturally. When he is young, he holds the ambition of going into space, with the rest who will also be picked alongside him. Vincent believes that he is qualified just like any other person. Hence he deserves the chance. Unfortunately, as he grows and begins to develop in mind, he realizes that there are restrictions such as; anyone who goes into space must have a fully functioning set of genes named earlier in this discussion. He begun to develop stress from this occasion, as his dreams and ambitions are cut short, with a reason that he believes he did not cause, and therefore feels isolated, and discriminated by this requirement as well.
As the scientific fictional movie proceeds, Vincent decides to play a trick to achieve his dream of landing into the space, by doing genetic manipulation using Gerome's genes whose genes functions well, but cannot attend the area because he suffered an accident sometime back; thus he is also blocked by the rules and requirements of the stated qualifications (Ebert). Vincent reveals how smart he is by playing the trick, and this is all about psychology, which enables one to think and respond accordingly. However, the fact that Vincent has malfunctioning genes puts him into stress, as he suffers from fear and guilt while in space, after the death of one of the officers. He fears that he will be caught, and hence this puts his health at risk.
In reality, humanity has heard a better percentage contribution to individual success. In the Gattaca movie, children who are born with gene problems are considered second class citizens as they are restricted from getting access to most of the public activities, and even from enjoying a variety of advantages that normal humans can do. In one way or the other, this kind of discrimination and isolation has a direct impact on one's health, because somebody can quickly develop stress. Nursing studies have revealed that stress has the potential to propagate into numerous severe illnesses like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD, both of which can easily cause chronic and heart-related diseases.
The Gattaca movie can also be linked to psychology in the sense that it proved readers and all the current learners that human abilities are built on mental characteristics and not the physical orientations. The movie brought up the idea of psychology because Vincent proceeds to an extra mile to confirm that, potentials are not built in the physical outlook as the standards were mentioned in some section of the movie, but are somewhat elevated by one's mental attitude. Suppose the view is changed to follow this principle, everyone will get the chance to do whatever they wish and are capable of, without limitations. Restrictions occasionally result in negative thoughts and attitudes (all defined by psychology), which might derail one's health through prolonged stress.
