Introduction
Pursuing an education, whether undergraduate or graduate programs, is a great opportunity that requires resources, time, and money. A well-designed leadership course coupled with the necessary materials, content, and educational tools equips learners with the leadership skills they need, such as effective communication, time management, and goal setting, to become successful. A leadership course must be designed in a way that it meets the needs of learners and gives them a unique learning experience. Thus, if I were to teach a leadership class, I would make significant changes to course design, content, experience, and the ease of using Canvas.
Changes to Course Design
When designing a leadership course, I will eliminate the mandatory requirement that learners must attend lectures and classes. The course design will provide students with convenient and flexible learning options. For example, those who prefer to study off-campus will be allowed to do so. Overall, the course will permit learners to choose how, when, and where to pursue their degree. This course design will assist learners in navigating their busy daily schedules, especially working students.
Changes to Course Content
Some leadership courses make use of outdated materials, including theories and frameworks created decades ago. When designing a leadership course, I will eliminate all anachronistic readings and topics and focus on the state-of-the-art leadership and management content that suits the learning needs of the 21st century. The course content will focus on industry-relevant areas of study and equip learners with leadership skills that they can use to inspire others to perform maximally. In the end, graduates will be problem-solvers, innovators, project initiators, and persons who can participate in challenging real-world situations.
Changes to Course Experience and Ease of Using Canvas
Some leadership courses involve long lecture hours, assignments, projects, and exams, which might give learners a negative experience. When designing a leadership course, I will the traditional way of engaging with learners and provide online forums and be active and reactive on social media. These approaches will engage students and meet the learning needs of all students, especially those with difficulties comprehending course content taught in class. Today’s learners need modern teaching. In order to ease the use of Canvas, I would encourage students to use the Canvas mobile app. This way, they will stay updated round the clock with messages, grades, and progress. Moreover, they will be able to upload assignments, communicate with peers and faculty, and keep track of course work anywhere anytime.
