Introduction
Social media has had a more significant impact on our daily lives from the instance at which people communicate and even spreading information. Today's digital world has changed how people deliver across all dynamics; for example, age levels, the way people work, and how people make and maintain friendships have taken a different twist. For instance, the genesis of email destroyed letter and art writing as the email, SMS, and social media communication is an irreversible impact on the mechanism in which people communicate in their daily lives. This paper will argue if Social media has destroyed the way people communicate in various ways.
Social Media
Social media has resulted in a greater impact on the communication dynamics of people in the world. Various social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and What Sapp have contributed to the collapse of traditional communications. It has impacted the verbal use of language. For instance, an Acronym like BFF (best friends forever) is no longer confined to use in messages and therefore becomes valid today (Humphreys, pg. 24).
Given that many people have mobile phones in developed and underdeveloped countries, they easily access social networks like Facebook and are entirely dependent on social media. As a result, it has replaced the way people communicate with friends and redefine how people read the news or even date. In the pat society embraced simple technology, but to date, many people are prone to using text messages than making phone calls as many mistakes are predominant, therefore taking communication skills for granted (Akti and Gürol, pg. 238). Longer messages are limited in social media as abbreviations are commonly used as, for instance, Twitter only allows 140 words per tweet. To date, many words are shortened and as brought an impact on many students as their literacy skills have declined significantly. Students' communication with each other is very different from 20 years ago due to incorrect grammar and spelling mistakes.
Technologically Dependent World
In a technologically dependent world, people are buried in social media. They spend many hours on social media per day, not talking to anyone, scrolling, and posting information on networks like twitter. Nature results in the hindrance of social skills as it prevents the young generation from communicating and socializing with each other. People use phones as a means of chatting rather than meeting physically or even making phone calls. People are getting together more often by being able to post on social media as they can hold meetings as they have abandoned face to face meetings with family members, friends, and not considered a healthy relationship. Lives should not revolve around social media because there exists a beautiful world to explore that people miss by spending much of their time on social media platforms (Isaacs, pg. 422).
Social media is hurting communication skills as it prevents the ability of people to communicate and interact face to face. Many young generations don't know how to talk to someone unless they are limited to characters confidently. Interviews have become a greater challenge, as people are not frequently exposed to real conversations with people in the world.
Value of Communication
There exists a greater deal on the value of communication actions on social media and how various individuals respond and affect their relationships with others. For instance, people tend to get upset when people they thought were their friend does not comment or like their photos or opens a snap chat and does not instantly respond. Communication actions mean a lot as it proves that people tend to consider likes and comments on social media more important than in-person interactions (Akti and Gürol, pg. 240).
A study shows that mobile phones' presence when two individuals talk tends to interfere with the connection and communication process. Human beings are considered social creatures that connect as people understand each other through internalizing body changes and facial expressions. A sense of understanding if felt by mimic the movements, and when devices interfere with people's conversations, it implies that the ability to connect and effectively communicate is undermined. In theory, social media has been designed to connect people, but practically it has acted as a barrier.
However, a fact exists that social media platforms are very significant in the current world. It plays a key role in the provision of news and the overall keeping in touch with families, friends, and colleagues, but people cannot afford it to be at the center of life. It is too easy to have access to social media and made language easier.
Conclusion
The evolution of social media created an avenue for daily information circulation. The growth of technology expands communication range, and social media has become a tool for regular interaction. The social networks have shifted people's face to face conversations through the screens. As a result, it has ruined communication in various ways like ruining social and communication skills, harmful to communication relationships, negatively impacted communication actions, and changed overall communication dynamics. In general social media can be considered beneficial if used wisely; however, the negative impact far outweighs the benefits of social media in society. Hence social media is destroying communication.
